1999 BRFL Week 8 Results |
Czupryna 39 Jones-Klingman 31JK box score CZ box score |
We've been kidding Czupryna about picking up falvors of the week and other teams
disgards. This week, it really payed off. The Mo-ha no longer needed Seattle
QBs when St Louis emerged and cut them lose. Always on the bottom of the heap,
making moves is CZ. With his new QB and a solid back like Marshall Faulk (three
straight 9 point games), CZ could rise up and claim a playoff spot in the weak West.
JK falls to 4-4 and if the playoffs began today, their season would be over. As a third place team in their division they would have to complete on points. JK's regular line-up failed him as Favre had a horrible game. He got half his points from a special reserve of KC's defense. |
MOS box score WAL box score |
Mos in first. Wallace first loss. McNair, early... sit on lead Write up in progress. |
Deitrich 64 Peil 32DP box score BUD box score |
Peil had a good game as expected, but you knew this was going to be a huge week for
Bud. The Redskin tongue-lashing produced 39 points between Brad Johnson and Stephen
Davis. After the Skins got up 48-zip, the newly required Marcus Robinson got into
the act for 15 points as the Bears played in garbage time. Leave to Bud to have
all bases covered.

Outlaw 72 Stroupe 43OUT box score STP box score |
This was a battle of highly rated rookies and Outlaw's Edgerrin James squared
off against Stroupe's Ricky Williams. Although Williams had good yardage, earning
two bonus points, James got three bonus points and a touchdown. On the subject of
Williams, it was also a battle for first round picks who have not scored. Williams
still hasn't found the end zone, and neither had Outlaw's Fred Taylor...until this
week. Outlaw won those two battles and this game.
For Outlaw, it was a quite a release after three very quiet weeks that put him out of a playoff spot in the competative Central division. New Englands QBs showed "early season form" with four strikes. Then there was the aforementioned Taylor, although the guy that Outlaw benched to make room for Taylor, James Stewart, picked up two garbage time TDs in the second half. One note: Outlaw picked up Doug Brien, the New Orleans kicker, kicked in 12, 3 coming when Ricky Williams was unable to slam it in. Twenty points on Monday was icing, but very important as Outlaw owns a points playoff slot. Stroupe, despite being 1-7 is actually in the playoffs at the moment. Thanks to his big week, he currently has JK and Peil outpointed for the last point slot. |
Jackson 38 Talbot 14TAL box score CJ box score |
Jackson has on his roster two defenses that are tied for second in the BRFL this
season, Washington and St Louis. This week he chose to start Washington and it
paid off with 12 points. Brett Conway, the Washington kicker, kicked in 14.
It is nice when you can cheer for for favorite team, and not against them.
Talbot, a Giant fan, couldn't have been happy when Leshon Johnson scored CJ's lone
player TD this week.
After jumping up with 47 against Best, Talbot went back to his usual pattern this week. He has scored below 20 in 7 of 8 weeks this year. |
Best 26 Barry 21AB box score BST box score |
This game was decided on how the Denver Broncos decided to defend the wide receivers of
the Minnesota Vikings. Specifically, they chose to double and triple team Barry's
Randy Moss and leave Best's Cris Carter in single coverage. The result? Two TDs
and 144 yards for Carter. Three catches, 0 TDs for Moss. Best wins by 5.
The game snapped a couple of streaks. Barry's four game winning streak is over as is Best's three game losing streak. The loss drops Barry from first place in the East where he resided in week 7. Best remains cemented in second in the West: two games behind Jackson and three ahead of basement dwellers CZ and Stroupe. The 47 point scored is a little more that one third of the 128 scored in last years game between these two, at the time the highest scoring game in BRFL history. |

Week 8 PreviewThe clash between the St Louis Rams and the Tenneesee Titans will be mirrored on the BRFL playing fields as the Mosakowski-Hale takes on Wallace. Wallace at 6-0-1 has the best record in the league, but 4-3 Mos on most weeks, may have the best team. Is Peil for real? Can AB stay on his lofty perch. Can Talbot generate a winning streak? Is Outlaw sliding to oblivion? 3-3 last week. 25-15-2 for the year. Mosakowski-Hale vs Wallace (-3)Looking at the standings, this does not look like a big game: A first place team vs a third place team. However, had Terrance Wilkins of Indy not been stopped inches from the goal line, this would have been a battle of two first place teams, as Mo-ha would have defeated Bud.This game also mirrors the match up of QBs as St Louis visits Tennessee, that is assuming Wallace uses Tennessee. The bigger the game, the more likely Wallace will tinker with his line-up. Usually in a big time match up, and who at the beginning of the season would have predicted that STL v TEN would be a "big time match-up", it is the kickers, not the QBs that excel, as a certain tightness sets in. That is probably what will happen here as neither STL or TEN is used to playing in such games. History wants me to pick MOS in this game, since Wallace shouldn't keep up this pace. However, Wallace gets the pick. With the predicted neutralization of Warner/Bruce, Mo-Ha's going to win with Duce Staley? I don't think so. Jones-Klingman (-7) vs CzuprynaThese two have been going at it since Reagan was in the White House. Speaking of the old and forgetful, CZ has seen the writing on the wall concerning Steve Young and his concussion problem, and has picked up Seattle QB. Seattle was discarded by the Mo-ha. One man's trash is another man's treasure. CZ will be glad to have them, but maybe not this week as they face a motivated Green Bay team. This curiously enough brings us to another QB v QB match up as JK's Green Bay faces CZ's Seattle. As I mentioned, Green Bay is motivated, and there is no better player in the BRFL that plays motivated than Brett Favre. No further analysis needed, JK in a laugher (cue up Vincent Price at the end of "Thriller"). Peil vs Deitrich (-13)A severe tongue lashing? A dressing down of the coach by the owner? You want motivation? Washington has it. Everyone in the league, start your Redskins. In our league, "everyone" means, "Bud, start your Redskins". They are hunting for Bear.DP's joyride is over. By the time the Vikes take the field, he will be several TDs behind. If he's lucky, this will be one of those "score 40 and lose games" he is famous for. Deitrich to end up with all the treats in his bag. Barry vs Best (-2)Best, on a slipperly slope, is favored here? Go on.... While the subject this week is motivation, how motivated is Jacksonville and Mark Brunell? All through the bye week, he's had to listen to how ineffective the offense is. They do have a strong and scoring defense, so who needs offense. What JAX QBs need is a game against Cincinnati... They get it this week.Best counters with Carolina at Atlanta or Rich Gannon and his broken wrist vs Miami. No one is home in this neighborhood. No treats this week. Barry hoists a cold one in his vacation paradise. Outlaw (-4) vs StroupeOutlaw gets Fred Taylor back this week. Stroupe has Indy QBs facing Deion Sanders. Outlaw needs this win very badly, but he will be upset. Stroupe will ride what will be a breakout week for Ricky Williams to glory.Talbot vs Jackson (-21)It is back into the grave for Talbot. He can't play Best every week. Jackson should romp thanks to Buffalo going deep on the Ravens. |
