Best Saves His Best for Last
Blows Out Bud 79-48

Steve Beuerlein's 31 points were the difference in 14th BRFL Super Bowl. On Sunday, Beuerlein threw for a career high five TD passes with two going to Wesley Walls. It was a fantasy players dream as Carolina kept having to score to keep place with Green Bay in a playoff tie breaker point differential. Best also got a score from Jonathan Linton. Best led 57-29 going into Monday.

Bud was in a deep hole early. He suffered a blow when Antonio Freeman was injured and could not participate in Green Bay's point fest. However, the performance of the Tennesee D in the 4:00 Sunday game gave him a sliver of hope for Monday. Tennesee scored two defensive TDs and a safety in wild shootout with Pittsburgh. None of Bud's other players could manage more than bonus points with 8 coming from new kicker Jeff Wilkins.

On Monday, it was the Tim Dwight show as he scored 22 points to add to Best's route. Best re-acquired Dwight to match up with Bud's Atlanta QBs. It proved to be an effective strategy. Dwight caught two Chandler TDs and returned a punt for a score. Chandler totaled 19 to bring Bud up to 48 points.

Best Finishes Season with 7 Straight Wins

For Best, it is his second championship in his fourth appearance. He won the first in 1994. The 79 points were more than what he scored in his three previous Super Bowls. Bets won every game following a week 10 loss to Deitrich. He also won 9 pf 10 down the stretch. The seven straight were a personal record, and the nine of ten ties a personal record.

$ome Consolation for Bud

For Deitrich, it was a loss in his first appearance. It also denied him opportunity to take over as the winningest BRFL team in terms of percentage. On the bright side, he did lead all teams in scoring this year with 750. His second time in the 700 club and the second highest of all time. Still, his enemies in the forum will probably label him (unfairly) as a choker. It was financally productive post season for Bud. His second place in the BRFL as well as another championship his own football league should pay handsomely.

Records Fall in Super Bowl

The 79 to 48 score seemed more like a basketball score than a football score. Even for the BRFL. It set the following records:

  • Most Points in Super Bowl by both teams: 127 (Old record: 95, Gravellesse 48 Bratcher 47, 1989)
  • Most Points by Super Bowl Winner: 79 Best (Old record: 65, Wallace 1996)
  • Most Points by a Super Bowl Loser: 48 Deitrich (Old Record: 47, Bratcher 1989)
  • Most Points by a QB in the Super Bowl: 31 Carolina (Best) (Old Record: 30 San Francisco (Czupryna, 1991)
  • Most Points by a player in Super Bowl: 22 Tim Dwight (Best) (Old Record: 20, Michael Jackson (Wallace, 1996)
  • Most Points by a Defense in Super Bowl: 19 Tennesse (Deitrich)
The following records were tied:
  • Most Wins, Super Bowl,2: Best 1994,1999; Wallace 1993, 1996; Ricker 1992,1997
  • Most Appearances, Super Bowl: 4, Best 1988,1994,1996, 1999; Wallace 1991,1993,1996,1997
  • Most Wins to finish a Season: 7, Best 1999 Czupryna 1991
The 79 points was also the most points scored by a team this year. It is the eighth highest scoring game in league history. The combined score is the highest scoring game of the season and the fourth highest of all time.

Week 17 Leaders

Week 17 Preview

Bud Sheds His Skins
Is He a Genius or Desperate?

All season long, as the Redskins went, so went Bud. He was identified with the team so much, his favorite, that he seemed to resemble the quarterback, Brad Johnson. However, going into week 17, Bud looked into the mirror, and didn't see Johnson, instead he saw a man who is despErate to win the Super Bowl. His match-ups looked poor. The Redskins wrapped up their division in week 16 with an overtime TD toss. The same play that propelled Bud past Wallace. Now he seems to have taken on Wallace's personna...being not afraid to make moves at critical times. It has back-fired on Wallace in the past, but it has proven successful, such when Wallace beat Best in the 96 Super Bowl. The situation then was very similar. Best appeared to be on a roll, and Wallace has terrible match-ups.

Johnson is out as is Albert Connell. The gimpy Stephen Davis remains on the roster, but will he play in week 17? Bud's roster is full of injury questions. Corey Dillon is hobbled. Tim Biakabutuka is hurting and is also out of a job. Also gone is the suddenly erratic Adam Vinatieri. New to the roster: Atlanta QBs, Fred Lane, Jeff Wilkins and Ahman Green. Wilkins kicked for Best in week 16. Lane plays for Best's QB team, Carolina. Green is replacing the injured Ricky Watters. The biggest gamble is Atlanta. They play San Francisco. The game is on a Monday night, and is about as meaningless a Monday night game as there ever was. "Come on already, let's play the Sugar Bowl." There is no incentive for Atlanta, except maybe to lose and improve their draft position.

Best, Bud's opponent, has the matchups of the Millennium. Right now only a Y2k Armageddon can stop him. Carolina QBs plays home against New Orleans in a game where they have to run up the score because the only playoff scenario open for them is point differential. Cris Carter and Gary Anderson can earn a home playoff game with a win, and possibly the division. Keyshawn Johnson's Jets are one of the few teams playing hard for pride and Miami's JJ Johnson is also trying to play his way into the playoffs. Best did make a move, re-acquiring up Tim Dwight to match up with Bud's Falcons.

Aside from the moves, it still looks difficult for Best to lose this game. Perhaps it won't be the blowout that looked likely prior to all Bud's moves. In the playoffs, Best has been averaging 50 points a game to Bud's 30. Best has won sixth straight and 8 of 9. He has scored at least 45 points in his last eight games. He has not lost since week 10. Interestingly enough, it was to Bud, and it was 59-51.

This one should be Best 55 Deitrich 35.
