22.05.2008 Shane joining Babyshambles on stage and Pete backstage - 13 May 2008 Photos by James Quinton. 19.05.2008 Sharon Shannon and Guests - Live at D10 Festival, Limerick by Rob Mc Namara 17th May, 2008 RedTrackMusic Not so much a gig by Sharon Shannon but a gathering of like minded and eclectic musicians who were all clearly enjoying the wonderful occasion. Shannon was as ever resplendent and on form. Traditional Irish sonic jams melded with music from around the world has become her staple and along with her band they alone could have stolen the weekend. However, throw in Mundy, Shane McGowan, Seamus Begley, Dessie O’ Halloran and a few more and you’ve got yourself a veritable variety show of Irish talent. Lauded songwriter Mundy was the first to join the band onstage and an electric version of ‘July’ got the crowd jumping. Shane McGowan then ambled on stage to rapturous applause for ‘The Irish Rover’ and ‘Fairytale Of New York’. McGowan’s presence is evident and he played up to his reputation as the showman. Seamus Begley treated the crowd a beautiful version of Gordon Lightfoot’s ‘Early Morning Rain’ before Mundy returned to reprise Steve Earle’s ‘Galway Girl’ with Shannon. Shannon’s band are chameleon like in their ability to shift musical styles with ease. There was Funk, Jazz, Bossa Nova and Rock all thrown into the bag. Brilliant headliners and a superb start to what was to become a fantastic weekend of musical celebration. He’s got our vote for best lyricist of the 20th century, and he’s a singer who can bring grown men to tears with just one well-turned phrase. Is he a drunk and a now-and-then junkie? Sure. But the fans that find amusement in that, the ones who hold him up as some kind of mascot of Irish debauchery, are missing the point entirely. MORE >>> 14.05.2008 On 13th of May Pete Doherty and his Babyshambles palyed at The Forum in Kentish Town, north London. "At one stage he was joined on stage by another notorious musician, Pogues singer Shane MacGowan, for a version of folk legend Ewan MacColl's Dirty Old Town." The Times: "When he <Pete Doherty> hauled the ex-Pogues singer Shane MacGowan up to sing Dirty Old Town, the gravel- throated old gargoyle effortlessly exposed the younger singer’s feeble voice and scrappy songwriting. " Gigwise: "One of the loudest cheers of the night was reserved for Shane McGowan, who clutched a drink as he sang ‘Dirty Old Town’ with the band." Photos by Rockhack.co.uk 12.05.2008 On 8th of May Shane took part in Belvedere Vodka Jagger Dagger launch party, to celebrate an ice dagger that Jade Jagger has designed for Belvedere Vodka: The Sun: " POGUES lord SHANE MacGOWAN was also at the party. He poured an entire bottle of vodka into an ice bucket containing two large blocks of ice then glugged the contents." Night I turned down Jade's party A bash thrown by the glamorous designer with her rock star dad in attendance? Victoria Mary Clarke just didn't want to go Sunday Indepenedent 11 May 2008 JADE JAGGER invited me to a party. I'm quite thrilled. I didn't know Jade liked me. I didn't even know she knew me. We have met, occasionally, but we didn't exchange numbers or anything. So naturally, when I got an email from somebody writing on Jade's behalf to enquire as to whether I might be free to party with her this week, I wondered why. The Nips (originally known as the Nipple Erectors) were formed by two punk scenesters in the late seventies, put out a mere three singles before going onto form the two central bands in the early 80s cowpunk scene, the Men They Couldn’t Hang and the Pogues. MORE >>> A review by Paul 'MadDog' MacGuinness (of The Popes): 1977 Heaven , The Nipple Erectors , The 100 Club The Hottest ticket in town last tueday was for the return of The Nips at one of the oldest punk venues , the 100 Club in Oxford St . I arrived early and the queue was already snaking down the street . As I got inside , the band were mid soundcheck , and although Shane was reading lyrics from scraps of paper , the band was sounding tight . After a short soundcheck I hooked up with Shane in the tiny dressing room and it was fantastic to see him looking so well . The Club filled up in no time and although the main bands were Johnny Moped and , The Cute Lepers , everybody knew they were there to see The Nips . Its been at least 25 years since they played together , but the band and thier music have aged well .. Surprisingly , they were first on , and kicked off about 8.30 .The band were looking a little nervous at first , but Shanes arrival on stage sent up a huge cheer , and the band relaxed and started belting out all the old classics ... they were tight as as a nuns arse , which I can tell you , is pretty tight .. Im So Pissed Off and Gabriel were particularly outstanding .. Shane forgot some of the lyrics at times , but Shanne gave him lots of prompts .. half way through the set they were joined by Shanne's daughter , Eucalypta on vocals .. The set lasted just over half an hour but it was pure magic .. Afterwards ... Shane , Spider , Victoria , myself and assorted friends headed off to Soho for a meal and a drink while the band made thier way to the 12 Bar Club in Denmark St .. We ended up in The Groucho Club till the wee small hours , where Madness frontman Chas Smash gave me some piano lessons ... ahaaa , 1977 Heaven .. catch all the pics of the evening in the pics section , thanks to Lydia for the photographs , and Fi for the editing and effects .... Speaking exclusively to the Leader prior to his appearance on stage as part of the D-10 festival last weekend, Mr McGowan said he believes the city attracts a disproportionate amount of negative coverage compared to Dublin, Cork and Galway. It was amazing, about a week after I bought the tickets The Nipple Erectors; Shane Macgowans original band before the Pogues, were confirmed as one of the openers. Seeing as Shane has a tendency to not show up at gigs that aren't the Pogues, Spider Stacy, also from the Pogues, was there as back up in case he didn't turn up. Well, he did turn up and got to speak with Spider for about 5 minutes, apparently I look just like somebody he knows that he couldn't remember. The Nips were great and Shane sounded great also. " The whole review by Fisherman SHANE MACGOWAN & THE NIPPLE ERECTORS AT THE 100 CLUB Vice by JAMES SHERRY "All the old punks were out in force last night at the rumoured reunion between Shane MacGowan and his first punk band The Nips (aka The Nipple Erectors). Although the gig was being headlined by Seattle punks the Cute Lepers (ex-Briefs) and cult punk icon and Damned prot?g? Johnny Moped, the possibility of seeing the first generation Roxy punks reunited got everyone down the front early. And people could scarcely believe it when Shane suddenly appeared from the side of the stage, decked out in a top hat and clutching a bottle of Bulmers. He staggered up to the microphone, told the crowd to "Fuck off!" as the band fired-up and starting blasting through prime ’77 punk cuts like "Nervous Wreck" and "Gabrielle." The band had rehearsed, but not with Shane and although he forgot many of the words and looked bewildered in parts, he naturally fell into the role of his punk past, slurring and shouting the majority of the words he could remember. Although it was a one-off, never-to-be-repeated event, The Nips looked like they enjoyed themselves so much that I wouldn't be surprised if they start popping up at pensioner punk gigs near you soon, with or without Shane." MORE (with pics!) >>> GOOD GOLLY MISS MOLLY Tonight The Nips played the 100 Club It was raw, ragged, loud and brilliant. Small dark sweaty basement room, 20 feet from the stage to the back wall. Shane must've been to the health farm or ahhhhh you're not gonna believe me ... but you will when you see him. He is looking extraordinarily well. Pogues regulation Irish drinking suit had been abandoned in favour of a punk get-up ... It worked, I'm telling ya, on paper this Nips Reunion should perhaps have been a mess, but it was glorious. A dozen numbers including King Of The Bop. Stavourdale Rd N5. So Pissed Off and sure enough we took a 73 to the city, went down to the old west end where we used to go when you were my girlfriend, the delightful Eucalypta took to the stage and sang backing vocals. Mother Shanne was superb, bouncing around on bass, the drummer wasn't born when the Nips last played and the guitarist was behind a pillar so can't tell you about him. And Shane was really enjoying himself. Shane knew all the songs bar one I think, so the lyrics to this unfortunate number went 'don't know the fucking words la la la'; at a pogues gig a big fucking problem, but with the nips? Fine. They'll play more I'm sure, I couldn't stick around for the chat after, had to leave as the last chord was still ringing - hopefully in sweaty basements, anything else would be wrong By CM at PRS guestbook 06.05.2008 Shane was guesting with Nick Cave in Dublin Castle on 3th May: "... He <Nick Cave> only did two encores, which I was hoping for at least one more. But on the second Shane McGowan joined them and sang Lucy. He was ridiculously out of tune and time the way only he can pull off and it was incredible. The Dublin crowd responded so heartwarming for him that he could have belted out a scratchy yodel and it would have been well received." The whole review by zuigiber . "In all, the band played two sets of encores and brought out a surprise special guest in a top-hatted Shane McGowan, who struggled through a number before doffing his hat and disappearing off again, as the crowd provided him some warm applause." The whole review by Longman Oz. "Shane McGowan staggered on to embarrass everyone with a tuneless rendition of Lucy which he got so completely wrong it was pathetic. This parading a once-great man out when he has no fucking idea what's what is just sad, enabling behaviour." By Semperet "He's just fucked really isn't he?! He came on stage with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds at the weekend, and although everyone shouted up their love and support, he was just AWFUL! He's only half alive, and had a voice like a drunk mangy dog. My Aussie mate had never seen or heard of him and was just flabbergasted." By Ellefoxx Photo evidence by steeboy (2 pics with Shane). Ross Halfin tells: March 28: As I'm checking into my hotel a Dickensian figure, half bent over in an old black suit, walks through the lobby to the patio and orders a large vodka and anything - it's Shane McGowan, looking so white in the sun his skin is translucent. Kazuyo - the filthy smelly dirty Japanese thing that works for me - LOVES him. I go and speak to Shane who is quite coherent as he gulps down his drink. I even ring Kazuyo and put him on the phone, 'Konichiwa', Shane slurs. He looks puzzled and can't get off the phone. I finally get the phone back and she is furious, 'WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME, BAKA (Japanese for stupid), I WOULD HAVE COME TO LA! She was meant to come with me and was too lazy for the flight. 'MAKE SURE YOU GET PHOTOS OF HIM!' I say sayonara and leave her to drown in her tears. I suggest to Shane the idea of a photo of him and John Lydon tomorrow in the hotel. I think he says yes but his accent is so thick and garbled he could be talking Martian. March 29: The Sex Pistols went well. I started at 10am, they were on time and got on with it (very rock'n'roll). They were asked to wear black so John Lydon turned up in light blue. John is very funny, he described hip hop with 'How would you like to walk around with a toilet seat covered in diamonds around your neck.' He pointed out all the bass and drums are lifted from the first Pil album. John hung out for most of the day, I got Karen to drive us to his house in Venice after he consumed about ten seabreezes (vodka and cranberry). 'I'm off to lunch, ' he declared at 4pm, stopping at a liquor store to stock up on beer. Shane McGowan's tour manager rang at 8pm, 'Are the lads (Sex Pistols) still around, we've just got up...' 20.03.2008 Shane MacGowan with Sharon Shannon & Big Band, Mundy and Dessie O Halloran dates (May-Aug, 2008): 2nd May, Fri - Dolan's Warehouse Festival, Limerick, Ireland - tickets on sale! Will it be the near-incomprehensible falling down drunk Shane MacGowan, or the only slightly slurred speech version? Last night at the Orpheum, Pogue fans thankfully got the latter, as the Irish-punk veteran gleefully howled through a marathon set of classics with surprising lucidity. MORE >>> Celtic punk rockers the Pogues still have it Show the crowd they have plenty of power, elan JAY N. MILLER The Patriot Ledger Mar 20, 2008 QUINCY — The Pogues had begun in 1982, broken up in 1996, and re-formed in 2001. Wednesday night’s show indicated the vintage lineup still has plenty of power and elan. This year’s tour ads boast of eight original Pogues in the lineup, and if MacGowan’s drinking makes him the most tenuous member at any given moment, the comeback of guitarist Philip Chevron, who battled throat cancer in June, makes him the most inspirational. MORE >>> Hoist a pint! The Pogues return again! By Jim Sullivan ( http://www.jimsullivanink.com ) Wednesday, 19 March 2008 St. Patrick's Day approaches in Boston - so you know if the Pogues are healthy they'll be among us. (As will the Chieftains, Saw Doctors and Dropkick Murphys.) The Pogues, fronted by singer-songwriter Shane MacGowan, is the band that started the whole Celtic/punk fusion in 1982, making music that was poetic, soothing, and angry. They were hellbent for destruction and romantically bittersweet. MORE >>> POGUES' EAST COAST TOUR Roseland, New York, NY, USA 15-17 March 2008 Pogues Can Never, Ever Retire! After 15 years in limbo, the lads have been doing annual pilgrimages to the States since 2002. The real Pogues, which is to say all of them, on stage, together. I have in the past seen parts of the Pogues before. I saw them in the early nineties sans Shane (sadly without Joe Strummer, whom I have never gotten to see perform live). and I have seen Shane and the Popes, which is essentially Shane covering Pogues tunes with a backing band, but never the full on, Pogues. It was quite an experience I have to say. MORE >>> The Pogues @ Rams Head Live Midnight Sun MS commenter/correspondent Mike Williams saw Irish punk rockers the Pogues at Rams Head Live last night. Here is his report ... At last night’s show, the Pogues’ songs about whiskey, rum, and spirited characters seemed like a perfect fit for Baltimore’s hard-drinking blue collar heritage. After a lively — if not largely ignored — opening set by ska veterans The Pietasters, lead singer Shane MacGowan and his band mates played for almost two hours. I had heard the live recordings-the ones where he forgets the words and slurs his way through the chorus hoping the all-knowing loyal-to-the-end audience will fill in the blanks. I had even seen the pictures, but not until you see it in person will you ever know the true nature of a Shane McGowan performance. It was fucking religious. And although I’ve no idea how Shane MacGowan has kept his liver from sliding down his pantleg after all these years, he has and he was upright and it was enough. MORE >>> PERFORMING ARTS: The Pogues by Chris Klimek Washington Post 10 Mar 2008 You know that feeling when the singer reaches the second verse of the national anthem, and the crowd switches from bellowing every syllable to awkwardly slurring the melody? That's what the vocals at a Pogues gig sound like. And we're not just talking about the crush of Guinness-sweating punters waiting impatiently to howl the chorus of "Sally MacLennane" or "The Body of an American." It's Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan, too -- especially him. Even back in the Irish trad-punk ensemble's Thatcher-era heyday, he disguised his poignant, funny lyrics beneath an unintelligible delivery. The group was running about an hour late, and the word among the security guards was that Pogues lead singer Shane MacGowan - who has a well-deserved reputation for drinking heavily - had not even shown up. Finally, with a sense of relief, the word came: Shane was in the building. Got some great seats on the balcony, two rows from the front. Show was supposed to come on at 7:30. 8 went by, and I started getting antsy. Finally, the opening act came on. Not impressed. They were called the Ike Reilly Assassination. Ike Reilly is like John Dylan, if John Dylan only had a fraction of his normal talent, and sold out to do pop songs. After they were done, it took 45 minutes to change the instruments out. By the time they were done, I was getting pretty pissed, and impatient. They marry traditional Irish tunes with punk aggression. The band roster is a mix of English and Irish musicians. And their frontman is living proof that a lead singer need not be charming for a band to succeed. (Hell, he doesn't even have teeth.) But the music is inspiring. Romantic even.
