My downstairs neighbor, Mr. Li, who is a 79-year- old man. He has been retired for many years, he has many illnesses, and so he is thin. He suffered a heart attack last year, and had to see a heart specialist. After he recovered, he kept up his daily activities, Even though he is old and weak, he still takes care of his grandchildren. |

We have been living in the same building since 1992. An odd thing happened to him. Recently, he received a letter from the Environmental Control Board. He didn’t know English and couldn’t read the letter. He came over to my home and asked for my help. I translated the letter, which stated that he violated the law by selling merchandise without a license. The Environmental Control Board fined Mr. Li $530 for the violation. If he does not pay he will be summoned to court. Mr. Li explained that he hasn’t sold any merchandise and felt that it was a matter of mistaken identity. Mr. Li was so upset when he told me the story that his face turned green. I decided to help Mr. Li write a letter to the Environmental Control Board, explaining his situation. |

After he returned home, my heart filled with joy for being able to help him by writing a letter. I am proud of my self for being able to translate the letter for him. I found that my English has gradually improved. I hope one day that I will be a volunteer to help more Chinese people! |
