Pele's League Week 6 Preview - October 4th Week 6 in Pele's League should be an interesting one. Let's check the games:
Randolph Blue Devils (1-4) vs. Sao Paulo 55ers (5-0) The Sao Paulo 55ers are leading Pele's League and they are the only undefeated team, with 5 straight wins. The Randolph Blue Devils will try to pull out a big upset and give themselves some streak of their own to try to get out of the next to last position in the league. The 55ers have two very good RB's in Terrell Davis and Robert Smith. Their problem this week is that QB Steve Young has a bye, so they'll have to start QB Kordell Stewart, who played well last week, but he's still unstable at most times. The receiving corp is solid: Carl Pickens and Antonio Freeman are two of the best in the NFL. The Blue Devils have to play very well if they want to beat the 55ers. They'll need Emmitt Smith to play like in past years, and they hope Marcus Allen gets the same amount of playing time he got last week.
Ithaca Isolators (4-1) vs. Cortland, NY Gradams Greats (2-3) The Ithaca Isolators are one of the league's beat teams. They've lost only once, and they have the league's best attack. The Gradams Greats are 2-3, but they are hoping a win against a tough team can give them the boost they need to get on track this season. The Isolators could be simply defined as the Raiders. They have QB Jeff George, RB Napoleon Kaufman, WR's Tim Brown and James Jett, TE Rickey Dudley, and the Oakland Denfese. So, they rely almost entirely on how the Raiders perform week after week. They also have RB Barry Sanders in the lineup, so they're very dangerous. As for the Gradams Greats, they'll need better production from RB Warrick Dunn and WR Michael Jackson in order to beat the Isolators. Their QB will be Stan Humphries, who played very well last week. The have a reliable kicker in Miami's Olindo Mare, so they are hoping to have a chance in this game.
Oporto Eagles (3-2) vs. Sao Paulo Golpes Baixos (0-5) The Golpes Baixos are on a very huge slump, and they need a win to at least hope to have a chance in this season. They'll face the Oporto Eagles, who at 3-2 have been solid. The Golpes Baixos are struggling mainly because QB Brett Favre just can't get on track. Add to that RB Eddie George slumping performances after a huge opening week, and 0-5 for them. They're hoping FB Mike Alstott can produce big again, and TE Ben Coates can make a run for them on Monday Night. The Eagles have two great receivers in Derrick Alexander (combo with QB Vinny Testaverde) and Jake Reed. Their RB's have been struggling a little lately, specially Ricky Watters, but they have the best defensive player in the league: Deion Sanders. Another problem for the Eagles is that their starting kicker, John Kasay, has a bye, so the probable starter will be Norm Johnson.
Sao Paulo CCM (2-3) vs. Sao Paulo Hard Plays (4-1) Well, another battle of Sao Paulo teams. The Hard Plays are second in the league with only a single loss, while the CCM started slowly but won 2 of the last 3. With QB Brad Johnson and RB Curtis Martin leading the way, the Hard Plays have a very good attack. They also have solid receivers, as Michael Irving and Robert Brooks are playing well, and they can score with easy. The CCM needs, as always, QB John Elway's big performances to win games. They'll also need a rebound from RB Terry Allen and his injury, because their RB has been unstable at best. They'll also need to substitute for the bye week defense of the 49ers, but their backup defense is the Rams, which also has a bye. They must hurry to free agency.
PIMP C's REAL G's (2-3) vs. San Juan Coquis (2-3) The last game of the week features two teams at 2-3, who are hoping they can get back to .500 and start to think about jumping up in the standings. The REAL G's have lost three straight after a great start, and they'll face the San Juan Coquis, who are coming off a win. The REAL G's seemed to be the best team in the first weeks, but their struggled concerned a lot of people. But coach Charles Mcquibban doesn't think that way. "I guarantee a win from the Real G's this week!", said Charles, arguing that the team definitely has the right players and whatever it takes to win. "It's just a matter of knowing who to start each week". And it's true, the G's lineup is very good, led by QB Drew Bledsoe and WR Jimmy Smith and Leslie Shepherd. But they'll miss RB Tiki Barber of the Giants, out with an injury. As for the Coquis, the big bright spot for them is Denver's wideouts, as they have both Rod Smith and Ed McCaffrey. TE Eric Bjornson is struggling, while RB's Mario Bates and Karim Abdul-Jabbar have yet to show some consistency. QB Neil O'Donnell is having a career year, with 10 TD passes and only 2 INT's, so he can be a huge factor for the Coquis in this very difficult matchup.
