Week 6

Reviews - Tuesday, September 30th
by Carlos Curro, Sao Paulo Travelers owner

This week in GFL we have a big battle between two divisional leaders, as The Lounge Lizards face the Screaming Meanies in what should be a huge matchup, with the winner becoming (or staying, in a Lizards' win) the GFL's best team. Week 6 also features some very good teams going against some not so good ones, as three 3-2 teams face teams with only one win each. But don't count them out yet: upsets have been very common this season... Let's check out the games:

The Lounge Lizards (4-1) vs. Screaming Meanies (3-2)
New London Wacker Boyz II (3-2) vs. New York Freaky Fat Cats (2-2-1)
Sao Paulo Travelers (3-2) vs. Da Kine Hawaiian (1-4)
Sao Paulo Big Passaros (3-2) vs. Kauai Rainbows (1-4)
Crown City Thorns (3-2) vs. Bloody Sabbaths (1-3-1)

(NFL Bye teams on Week 6: Atlanta, Carolina, St. Louis, San Francisco)

The Lounge Lizards (4-1) vs. Screaming Meanies (3-2)

The Lounge Lizards have the best record in football at 4-1. Not only that, but they've beaten two divisional rivals in the way for that record. This week, they'll have to face a Screaming Meanies team that's trying to rebound from a loss to the Big Passaros last week.

The Meanies are tied for first place in the East. Their offense is definitely based in the running game, as they have two of the best RB's in the game today: Terrell Davis and Robert Smith, and both have been outstanding in the first five weeks, ranked today as #1 and #2 in GFL. They can also rely on rookie Warrick Dunn, not only as a backup but even in a 3-RB lineup. Their best wideout is Jimmy Smith of the Jaguars. At QB, the starter will probably be Dan Marino, who had a bye last week, and was replaced by the 40-year-old Warren Moon, who played well. Marino have been struggling this season, so coach Chris Harmon might stay with Moon in a game time decision. They have a very good lineup, and they welcome back TE Ben Coates - who plays on Monday Night and can be a factor.

At 4-1, the Lizards certainly showed some great players, led by the emerging QB Jeff George, ranked #1 in GFL. They also have some depth, as his backup is Brad Johnson (#3). But they have a problem this week: both of their kickers have a bye week. As of Saturday 9 am, they still haven't found a replacement. They'll, of course, find a kicker in the Free Agent pool, but it may be a huge factor in a close game.

New London Wacker Boyz II (3-2) vs. New York Freaky Fat Cats (2-2-1)

The New London Wacker Boyz II are tied for second in the GFL West, and they'll face a team that started slowly, but has got some good results in the last games, as the New York Freaky Fat Cats are now battling for a first-place position in the East.

The Boyz are hoping they can count with RB Terry Allen, who has been bothered by a thumb injury and have yet to show some big TD production as he did last year. Their starting TE Brent Jones and the Carolina D both have a bye this week, so the replacements will probably be TE Ted Popson and the up-and-down Seahawks defense. RB Thurman Thomas might be back at the starting lineup, although his playing time in Buffalo seems to be getting smaller in each game.

Although the Cats might still think at that draw against the Sabbaths two weeks ago (if they'd won, they'll be tied for first in the East today), they now have to think only in beating the Boyz. Bye week is not a problem now for them, as they'll lose no starters for this game. They will start, of course, their combo package of QB Jeff Blake and WR Carl Pickens, while RB Barry Sanders leads the running game, along with Buffalo's newest RB, Antowain Smith, who has stolen some playing time from the Boyz' Thurman Thomas. WR Jake Reed, ranked #2 in GFL, may be a key as Minnesota plays the weak Arizona Cardinals.

Sao Paulo Travelers (3-2) vs. Da Kine Hawaiian (1-4)

After a big 3-0 start, the Sao Paulo Travelers had two very tough weeks, along with two very tough and very close losses. They'll try to rebound against the last place team in the West, as the Da Kine Hawaiian only won once this season.

The Travelers will mantain struggling backs Eddie George and Ricky Watters in the lineup, but they know that if WR Tim Brown doesn't get to the endzone, they'll have almost no chance. And the Travelers slump goes three weeks back: they haven't scored a rush or receiving TD since week 2! They desperately need a TD to breath easy again.

The Hawaiian should be worried that a lot of their players have a bye this week, but as they were struggling, this change might help instead of worry them. The only really player that will be missed is QB Steve Young, who was awsome after coming back from the concussion. They have a good lineup, with WR Herman Moore and RB Jerome Bettis leading the way. Kicking is also great: rookie Olindo Mare of the Dolphins have been solid as rock. They went to the Free Agent Market to find a replacement for Young, and they came up with Chargers' QB Stan Humphries, who last week connected three time with Tony Martin for TD's.

Sao Paulo Big Passaros (3-2) vs. Kauai Rainbows (1-4)

The Sao Paulo Big Passaros rebounded last week from two consecutive losses scoring an amazing 90 point total, defeating the divisional foe Meanies and taking a tie for first place in the East. In this same division, the worst team is the one they face this week, as the Kauai Rainbows are in a huge struggle to get out of last place.

The Rainbows need, desperately, Brett Favre. He might be the difference between a win and a loss, and so far he hasn't been the real Brett Favre, Super Bowl champion, last season MVP. The other pieces of the team look very solid, as they have WR Rod Smith, James Jett, Derrick Alexander and they have the TE-WR like Shannon Sharpe. They might be missing a great RB, as they have New Orleans' Mario Bates and Miami's Karim Abdul-Jabbar, battling for a starting position. FB Kimble Anders might see some action if those two can't produce soon.

The attack of the Passaros was spectacular last week, and their best player, QB Drew Bledose, didn't play then (bye)! Now, with Bledsoe back in the starting lineup, WR Tony Martin playing in last year's form, they have a very dangerous team. TE Rickey Dudley appears to be headed to become one of the league's best. And the Cowboys Defense is the reason for Dallas wins with offensive struggles. So, the Passaros are loaded with weapons. But, at RB, Bam Morris and Dorsey Levens have yet to show some big numbers. Coach Luis Curro said he might do some game time decision and substitute one of the backs for a receiver, probably inserting WR Vincent Brisby - giving them a big combo for Monday Night.

Crown City Thorns (3-2) vs. Bloody Sabbaths (1-3-1)

The Bloody Sabbaths finally got a win last week, and now they don't want to stop what they hope to be a winning streak. The Crown City Thorns are tied for first in the East, so they won't be fresh meat for the bloody and furious Sabbaths attack.

The Thorns have a solid team, although their attack is not spectacular (tied for 8th in the league). Well, coach Kevin McBreen might say, the Sabbaths have the very worst attack! It's true, but the Sabbaths scored a solid 67 last week, when the Thorns scored 46. As both teams are coming from wins, this should be a very good matchup.

The biggest point in favor of the Thorns is the return of RB Curtis Martin. He's the kind of player that produces to win games, so he can be a huge factor on Monday Night... on the other side, he'll be playing the tough Denver Broncos Defense. The biggest question is who will start at QB: Mark Brunell, who played poorly last week (-1 point), or the unstable Scott Mitchell, who played for 8 points? The Jaguars QB might get the spot, as he is so more versatile than the pocket minded Mitchell. But coach Kevin McBreen might have got himself a QB controversy!

The Sabbaths will need good performances again by QB Kordell Stewart and RB Napoleon Kaufman. They got WR Leslie Shepherd from waivers to be a help in the receiving corp.
