ROUND TEN
Saturday the 5th
of June.
GLENELG 4.5 8.7
9.9 12.16 (88)
EAGLES 1.1 5.5 9.6 13.7 (85)
20 points down
with less than seven minutes to play and all seemed lost.
However, the 1999 Tiger outfit does not give up. The last
three goals of the match, superb effort from veterans
Rouvray and Jameson and an inspiring Sherwood tackle in
the final minutes saw Glenelg score an unlikely victory.
The win ensues the Tigers hold second spot on the SANFL
ladder. It was a day of come backs for Glenelg, with the
reserves over coming an eight goal deficit at quarter
time, to eventaully tie their match. The match report is
extracted from the "Sunday Mail," the photo is
from "The Advertiser."
REVIVED BAYS DIG
DEEP.
By Paul Kermode.
Glenelg's resurgence continued at Adelaide Oval yesterday
with a determined, come from behind 12.16 (88) to 13.7
(85) victory against Woodville-West Torrens in their
shoot-out for second position.
Despite leading for most of the day, Glenelg found itself
20 points down seven minutes into the last term, but dug
deep to kick the last three goals of the day and record a
stirring three point victory.
The Tigers had advanced to second spot on the SANFL
ladder this year on the back of a brilliant running
brigade. But, in keeping that position yesterday, Glenelg
added a new string to its bow: the ability to work its
way back into - and ultimately win - a game that seemed
lost.
When the Eagles slammed on four goals in the first seven
minutes of the final term, they looked to have the game
in their keeping. In fact, coach Mark Mickan said his
side started to celebrating too early, costing it the
match.
And Glenelg, with veterans Paul Rouvray and Jameson
asserting their authority on the game, steadily wrested
back control.

The
Tigers did so with a mix of skill and grit - Rouvray and
Jameson providing the skill and run through the midfield
and the likes of Paul Sherwood, whose tackle on the
speedy Spiro Darzanos in time-on of the last quarter was
match winning, provided the grit.
Rouvray who starts at centre half back before pushing
forward at every opportunity, had been a valuable player
in the first three quarters.
He lifted his rating even further in the last, kicking
two goals, including the go-ahead goal 20 minutes into
the final term. Jameson, too, was a valuable midfield cog
when thrown into the middle after a solid showing in
defence. And Richard Kelly, particularly in Glenelg's
fine first half, got the Tigers started with his attack
on the ball and clever handpassing.
Glenelg now takes a one game lead over the Eagles into
next round's bye - and a self belief that is growing with
every game.
"We were in deep trouble half way through the last
quarter," coach Tony McGuinness said.
"You look for improvements in a side and one of them
is character and the ability to come from behind and win.
The fact that we were able to do that is another clear
sign of the improvement in the side and the side's
belief."
For the Eagles, it was a tough lesson in playing out the
game until the final siren. "It looked like we were
happy with what we had done 15 minutes into the last
quarter and that's no time to be celebrating," he
said.
At half time, it looked unlikely the Eagles would be in
position to challenge for the lead, let alone blow it. It
was only through the efforts of Rhett Biglands, captain
Andrew Rogers and Midfielder Gavin Colville that the
Eagles were close enough to get back the lead when they
lifted their work rate in a fine third quarter.
