ROUND SEVEN
Saturday the 8th
of May.
GLENELG 3.3 5.5
8.7 13.11 (89)
NORWOOD 2.1 3.1 4.4 6.4 (40)
The game against
Norwood promised to be a stern test of Glenelg's new
found confidence. It was a test that was passed with
flying colours. For me, the most telling statistic to
come out of the game, was the fact that Glenelg took 53
marks to Norwood's 46, despite a clear height
disadvantage. As Tony McGuinness told his players during
the quarter time break- "we are harder than
them!"- and it was true.
James Byrne must be an early favourite for the club best
and fairest, after a best on ground performance. He has
not been out of the best players in 6 games so far this
season. Matthew Bode was also magnificent after his
suprising ommission from the Port Power side. The most
pleasinsg aspect of the victory was that all players
contributed, this Glenelg side does not have any
passengers. The match report is extracted from the
"Sunday Mail", the picture from the
"Advertiser".
TIGER TRAIN
UNSTOPPABLE
By Paul Kermode.
Glenelg's band of quicksilver midfielders left Norwood on
their wake at Glenelg Oval yesterday, running away with a
49 point victory.
Sparked by lighting-quick Matthew Bode, superbly skilled
James Byrne and hard working Richard Kelly, the Tiger
midfield completely overwhelmed Norwood to propel Glenelg
to its third straight victory.
Bode was electric in the first half when the game was in
the balance, winning 15 possessions and kicking 3 goals
before the main break.
Only the discipline of Norwood deputy vice captain Todd
Davey, brought off the interchange bench shortly before
half-time to tag the rampant Bode, stopped him from
inflicting further damage.

Byrne, the
former Sydney reserves player, and Kelly, playing against
his former club, formed a lethal one-two punch in the
centre square-Kelly all hustle and bustle to win the ball
when it was in dispute, and Byrne a class act with each
of his 35 possessions.
"They killed us around the packs, no doubt,"
Norwood coach Peter Rohde said.
"In terms of clearances away from the packs and the
efficiency of their onballers, they were miles in front
of us, and we pride ourselves on being hard at it and
strong around the footy."
'Not only did they win it so many times, but they won it
so easily and so creatively that we never looked like
getting it."
For the Tigers, a second straight win against a 1998
finalist was further vindication of their creative game
plan, which revolves around winning the ball from packs
and using their running players to hurt opposition sides.
Yesterday's 13.11 (89) to 6.4 (40) victory showed that
Glenelg's game will test allcomers this season.
"I think one of the good things about the side is
they're learning how to be able to hustle really hard and
they're really hard around the ball-that's something we
work on and the team prides itself on," Glenelg
coach Tony McGuinness said.
While we maintain that kind of intensity around the footy
and continue to improve the way we use it and our
efficiency, we'll be a dangerous side."
That intensity showed most clearly in the second and
third quarters, when Norwood briefly held sway, but could
not find the time or space to confidently go forward.
Despite holding a decent height advantage, Norwood
managed a miserable 4 marks in the second quarter and
just 9 in the third.
The Tigers had contributors all over the field and, with
Martin Mellody to slot back into the midfield, go into
Saturday's home game against South Adelaide full of
confidence.
