ROUND SEVENTEEN
Saturday 25th of
July.
GLENELG 3.1 5.4
7.5 15.8 (98)
CENTRAL 2.3 6.5 8.7 9.8 (63)
Glenelg has paid a
heavy price for its vital win against Central District,
with star midfielder James Byrne breaking his arm. Byrne
has been in the best players for almost every game this
season and will be sorely missed.
Glenelg will face South Adelaide at Noarlunga next
Sunday. No game is a foregone conclusion but Glenelg
should defeat the struggling South outfit. Noarlunga is
notorious for producing tough, windy conditions and the
Tigers will be praying for a fine day as this is an
opportunity to build its percentage, before the bye in
the following week. Of the seven sides shooting for a
spot in the final five, Glenelgs' percentage is higher
than only Central.
The match report is extracted from the "Sunday
Mail".
TIGERS' LATE
BLITZ STUNS DOGS
By Doug Robertson
The Tigers turned a last quarter arm-wrestle into a
tear-away 15.8 (98) to 9.9 (63) win against stunned
Central District at the Bay yesterday.
Glenelg, eight points down at three-quarter time,
engineered an amazing turnaround after drawing even with
the desperate Bulldogs midway through the term.
What followed blew a tough, grinding contest out of the
water, with the Tigers blasting six unanswered goals in a
barmstorming effoort which left the Bulldogs wondering
what went wrong.
The blow-out
masked what was a tense, torrid match but the Tigers'
ability to take the contest by the scruff of the neck and
lift to the next level has reignited their finals
credibility while nearly extinguishing the Bulldog'
finals hopes.
The win, however
came at a high cost with key Tiger contributors James
Byrne suffering a broken arm and Lance Picioane badly
twisting his left ankle, both in the last quarter.
Glenelg coach Tony
McGuinness said the injuries definitely soured the
victory, but put a challenge to other Tigers to step up
and maintain the level of intensity.
"I said to them at three-quarter time this game is
still there to be won, even though we had not played very
well, and we had to draw on the belif and confidence that
we have built," McGuinness said. "If you have
got a side that plays with that passion and desperation
then it is going to win you those tough, hard games and
we demonstrated that in the last quarter when it had to
be won."
Glenelg had winners everywhere during its eight-goal
siege, with substitute Ben McEntee kicking two late in
the term to help the sides' percentage, and busy Alistair
Burke and Ben Physick nailing one each to give the Tigers
the lead in the ninth minute.
The supply was non-stop through the middle - with Simon
Hele, Richard Kelly, Brett Higgins and Nick Chigwidden
amongst the hardest workers, while Mark Viska, Paul
Sherwood and Martin Mellody had some respite after
sterling efforts in defence.
Central, stung by comments through the week about players
not pulling their weight, battled desperatly and looked
like toppling the Tigers when they lead an evenly-fought
contest at three quarter time.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 15-point lead before Glenelg
could score in the opening quarter, maintained the
intensity and began to reap the benifits midway through
the second quarter when Derek Barr, a late replacement
for 'flu victim Brian Haraida, scored and tenacious
Daniel Hulm claimed two goals.
Central's bottom-of-the-pack desperation and ferocity at
the ball seemed to rattle the Tigers, with work horse
ruckman Damien Arnold combining well with a revolving
midfield of Hulm, David lillico, Heath Hopgood, Marco
Bello and Rick MacGowen. But in the final quarter, with
Arnold tiring and Golding getting on top, the Tigers were
able to dramatically wrest back control.
