ROUND FOUR
Friday the 16th of
April.
STURT 1.1 7.2
11.3 14.6 (90)
GLENELG 3.6 4.9 7.9 8.13 (61)
In keeping with
the match against Port Adelaide, Glenelg were woefully
indirect and wasted many disposals against Sturt. Time
and time again Glenelg turned the ball over to the
opposition, even when under little or no pressure, and
the ball delivery into the forward line was appalling.
Best again was ruckman Matthew Golding. One shudders to
think about the impact to the side should he be seconded
by the Crows.
On a positive note, Glenelgs' two losses have been
against last years grand finalists, and there is some
cause for optimism when considering the Tigers' chances
against the other clubs. Glenelg are displaying enough
committment and winning enough of the ball to be a
threat. Shocking disposal is currently the barrier that
is preventing that threat from becoming reality. The
match report is extracted from "The
Advertiser."
STURT FLOG BAYS
By Doug Robertson.
A tough and more systematic Sturt ground out a
scratchy 44-point victory without much of its customary
flair - but importantly with grunt - over desperate but
wasteful Glenelg at Adelaide Oval last night. Sturt
earned the two premiership points with the 14.15 (99) to
8.8 (56) win and maintained its top-two rating - but the
sloppy spectacle would not have excited football purists.
With towering Stephen White in control at centre
half-forward and Julian Burton a hard-running target at
the goalmouth, Sturt kept a grip on the outcome.
But it had to fight - probably the most pleasing sign for
its fans - for the win when determined Glenelg found
spark in the third term. The Tigers came to within four
points 12 minutes into the term and looked full of
running.
Nick Chigwidden, Martin Mellody, Simon Hele, James Byme
and Sudjai Cook suddenly looked assured and made use of
Matthew Goldings' rliek dominance.
They found time to deliver the ball neatly, for the first
time on the night, and Glenelg's fringe players came to
life. When the Tigers booted two goals in less than a
minute the challenge was there.
But that's where it ended.

Merciless Sturt kicked back with 4.5 to nothing in the
next 15 minutes to take the sting out of the Tigers' tail
and put the result beyond doubt.
Sturt led by 32 points going into the last term but did
not stop the intensity.
White took 11 marks for the night and outworked Todd
Winstanley then the unpretentious Corey Smelt, while
Burton ran Paul Rouvray ragged.
They enjoyed Sturt's clean delivery while Glenelg's
midfielders gave their forwards a nightmare with some of
the sloppiest delivery seen in the SANFL for years.
Glenelg won the ball enough to be a threat but its
atrocious disposal, even when clear and free to lift the
head, killed off any hope of victory.
Sturt simply was too good on the night but it, too,
squandered opportunities in the opening quarter.
Its usually efficient key forwards , and link-men
overused the ball with a touch of arrogance that should
have allowed Glenelg's defence to crack the flow.
But caught second to the ball on most occasions and often
hesitant to take risks, the Tigers wasted the moment when
a rush of direct play could have split open the Blues and
turned a trickle of opportunity into a flood.
Glenelg allowed Sturt's forwards and midfielders to
dictate proceedings for three quarters, and when Glenelg
did venture forward it was usually short and wide to the
vacant flanks.
It refocused from midway through the second term when
James Byrne, Simon Hele and Josh Carr began winning the
ball in the centre.
When they pushed forward quickly Chad Comes at centre
half-forward had a chance one-out.
Comes, however, did not battle desperately at half
chances and took just three marks for the night.
Glenelg sadly lacked a strong-marking target. Sturt had
two and won the contest easily.
