ROUND EIGHT
Saturday the 15th
of May.
GLENELG 2.3 5.6
7.7 12.9 (81)
SOUTH 0.1 2.4 4.6 5.8 (38)
It was a scrappy,
lacklustre affair, but Glenelg were able to come away
with the points. It is significant that Glenelg was able
to overcome the unsettling effect of 5 forced changes to
its playing personnel. Vetrens Hele and Kretschmer led by
example and stood out with Carr, as Glenelgs' best. Ben
McEntee showed plenty of promise at full forward, whilst
Ricky Halls' performance in the second half reaffirmed
his huge potential. The win allowed the Tigers to stay in
second spot on the ladder, only one game behind leaders
Port Adelaide. The match report is extracted from the
"Sunday Mail."
By Doug Robertson.
A developing Glenelg
battled for three quarters before overpowering a limp
South Adelaide by 43 points to hold second spot and plant
the Panthers firmly and alone at the foot of the SANFL
ladder, at Glenelg Oval yesterday.
Glenelg's grinding 12.9 (81) to South's inadequate 5.8
(38) showed Another dimension of the born-again Tigers
Tigers, which must now test their talent in the wet and
trying winter months to come.
Glenelg rarely showed the fluid System of recent weeks.
At times it looked decidedly ragged even when not under
much pressure but when It needed to split the difference
between the form of the two sides the Tigers had plenty
to offer.
They led by only 18 points five minutes Into the final
term then banged on the final four goals of the game with
glimpses of the cohesion and skill it has displayed for
the past month.
High-flying 19-year-old forward Ben McEntee (188cm)
emerged as a willing target at full forward. He moved
from half-forward at half-time after Glenelg lost
State-squad half-back Paul Rouvray just before the break
with slight concussion and five stitches above the eye.
Brandon Feddema (1.0) went from the goal mouth to defence
and the almost-forgotten rover Ricky Hall Came off the
bench to ignite several passages of smooth play and
contribute three goals to be the game's top scorer in a
half.
"The circumstances of the game didn't allow us to
play the way we have in previous weeks," coach Tony
McGuinness said. "That's going to happen in windy
conditions and against an (opponent) that's under
pressure and has got to come out and do the job. The game
fell into a bit of a scrappy, messy game and it wasn't
pretty."
"Full credit to South, they came at us pretty hard.
I thought the game was in the balance for pretty well
most of it... but when the game was there to be won in
the last quarter we did."
"We've got to got back to square one," dejected
coach Ken Applegarth said after addressing his players
for almost 30 minutes behind locked doors. "I asked
them for a four-quarter effort and at three quarter time
I was reasonably happy. But we just fell away after
that."
