ROUND NINETEEN
Saturday 17th of August

GLENELG 4.0 7.1 10.4 12.7 (79)
EAGLES 2.2 7.5 7.7 8.8 (56)

This 25 point win over the Eagles was a fine effort. The fact that it was achieved without Byrne, Hele, Mellody and Viska, all key players missing through injury, adds to the merit of the win. Richard Kelly was clearly best on ground, closely followed by Nick Chigwidden. Michael Raidis had his best game for the year, whilst Simon Nicholas grows in stature with every game. Chad Cornes always looked dangerous up forward and kicked an amazing goal from the pocket in the first term. Stuggling Port Power will look closely at Cornes for selection next week.
Glenelg has the bye next week, which allows the injury stricken club a chance to regroup before facing Port Adelaide at home.
Glenelgs' remaining games are Port at home, Sturt at Unley and West at Richmond. Glenelg must win two of these matches to be certain of a finals berth, although one will probably be enough. Three wins would snare the Tigers a top three finish and the double chance in the finals.

CUNNING TIGERS IN FOR THE KILL

By Doug Robertson
Hungry Glenelg planned, plotted and pressured Woodville-West Toerrens into vulnerability, then punished it for a lack of fight with a tough 25-point win at Woodville oval yesterday.
Glenelg added insult by replacing the Eagles in third spot with a workman-like 12.7 (79) to 8.8 (56) win. The Tigers moved equal with second placed Norwood on points, as the Eagles slid to the edge of the five - one game clear of West Adelaide - with just four minor rounds remaining.
Glenelgs' adaptability and work-rate exposed the Eagles' classy, but lightweight runners when the rain fell for most of the second half. The game became a s;og and it was the rugged Tiger mid fielders who proved to have the measure of hardness and aggression at the ball needed when the pretty stuff is insufficient.
The Tigers clearly had a game plan early and no line, from deep in defence to the three pronged goal sneek set up of Chad Cornes, Justin Scripps and Ben McEntee, were reluctant to take chances or run out of trouble.
The creativity rattled the Eagles but didn't ground them. It was Glenelg's ability to change style to suit the conditions that exposed a weakness in the highly fancied Eagles.
A five-goal wing favouring the southern end influenced the first half, but Glenelg was always more efficient. It had less of the ball in the opening term, but kicked 4.0 to 2.2. After the Eagles kicked 16 points clear in the first 17 minutes of the second term, and looked ready to dominate, Glenelg's gutsy Richard Kelly, Brett Higgins, Alistair Burke, Lance Picioane, and sparky Nick Chigwidden stood firm. Glenelg kicked three goals in 10 minutes to hang on.
Glenelg played in three styles: firstly creative, then with blistering tackling which produced countless turnovers, and finished with tight, strong and controlled footy to close out any hope of an Eagles resurgance.

Justin Scripps marks against The Eagles

"We're hard around the ball and they gave 100 percent effort," Glenelg coach Tony McGuinness said. "The play starts when there's a dispute ball and when we win more of them and use the ball properly we give ourselves a chance."
The honors were shared when the Eagles went in at half-time four points up, but the second half was all Glenelg's. It held the Eagles goalless from 22 minutes into the second term, until John McCarthy soccered through the Eagles' only goal for the second half from the square 10 minutes into the last, which brought the margin within nine points.
Glenelg was not intimidated, and when Damien Gigney made an inspirational dash on to a loose ball to plough through Andrew Rogers three minutes into time on, the outcome was sealed. The Tigers lifted and deserve to be in the five because of the heart they repeatedly display.
Eagles coach Mark Mickan, has to wonder why his team didn't play up to standard.
"Wet-weather football demands wet-weather methods," he said. "It means body over the ball, kicking it forward and a real contest at ground level."
Mickan said the Eagles were competitive to the main break, but their second half was a "real concern".
