ROUND FIVE
Saturday the 24th
of April.
GLENELG 3.6
12.10 16.18 20.25 (145)
NORTH 5.4 9.4 10.7 12.9 (81)
Glenelg were
simply a cut above a very ordinary North outfit. In fact,
the score line is flattering to North, as Glenelg
squandered several easy chances in front of goal and
could have easily won the game by another 5 goals. Chad
Cornes was excellent after a disapointing effort against
Sturt and Justin Byrne continued his great form.
The effort of Todd Winstanley was most encouraging, he
really stepped up in the abscence of Golding. Winstanley
was reported after crashing into Chris Naish a fraction
of a second after the latter had taken a chest mark. The
decison to award a 50 metre penalty was marginal and the
report was one of the softest this observer has
witnessed. Naish picked himself up immediately, without a
hair out of place. With no television coverage of the
game to highlight the trivial nature of the incident, the
verdict will be most interesting. Glenelg can ill afford
to lose Winstanley with Golding likely to be playing for
the Crows.
The match report is extracted from "The Sunday
Mail."
TIGERS HUMILIATE
STRUGGLING NORTH
By Doug Robertson.
A mostly smooth-moving and extremely confident Glenelg
angrily ripped apart a struggling North Adelaide with a
humiliating 64 point thrashing and dumped the Roosters at
the bottom of the SANFL ladder.
The depleted Tigers cruised to an impressive 20.25 (145)
to 12.9 (81) victory at Glenelg oval yesterday despite
going into the game without outstanding key-ruckman
Matthew Golding (Crows) and first choice full forward
Brendon Feddema (corked thigh).
But never did it miss Golding's usual dominance as
Glenenlg's hyperactive midfielders fed of North big man
Lucas Herbert and seemed to work out a few bugs in the
system mainly because of the astonishing lack of focus
from the often pedestrian Roosters.
A brilliant and hard - running second term set Glenelg up
for a big victory. Chad Cornes burst into the contest
marking strongly and working across the entire
half-forward area. The Port Adelaide Power-listed Cornes
gave his midfeild runners and the rebounding half-backs
an obvious target that they eagerly welcomed.
Cornes picked up seven kicks, three classy marks, one
handball and kicked 2.2 for the term in a dominant
display that gave a glimpse of his depth of talent and
turned the early tight contest to the Tigers.
James Byrne, Josh Carr and Matthew Liptak were on top in
the pivot -although the underdone Liptak spent most of
the second half in a forward pocket - and defenders Paul
Rouvray, Richard Kelly, Martin Mellody and Brett Higgins
worked the ball forward with the touch of skill critics
claimed the Tigers lacked.
Glenelg picked up 87 possessions for the second term to
North's 43, which was a true indication of the stateof
both outfits.
The only downer for Glenelg was Todd Wistanley being
reported for allegedly charging Chris Naish during the
second term - one of a handful of decisions to excite
supporters from both clubs during a sometimes puzzling
display.
Brendon Parker, with 10 marks and 12 penertrating kicks,
was North's only consistently threatening forward for the
four quarters. Most of his team-mates struggled even to
man up on opponents let alone have the prsence of mind to
attack the ball creatively.
"We believe we have a team that will win more than
it loses and you can see when we are hard at the footy
and use it what damage we can do," Glenelg coach
Tony McGuiness said.
North couldn't recover after Glenelg's second - quarter
onslaught and didn't progress past centre for the first
10 minutes of the third term.
"We're just not adhering to team rules or sticking
to the team plans," said co-captain Parker. "If
you want to point the finger at anyone, point it at the
players."
