ROUND THREE
Saturday the
10th of April.
PORT 1.1 7.2
11.3 14.6 (90)
GLENELG 3.6 4.9 7.9 8.13 (61)
More kicks,
handballs, marks, tackles and scoring shots than the
opposition, a possibly serious knee injury to Mark Viska
and a losing margin of 29 points. The Alberton oval match
was a frustrating experience for the Tiger fans present
at the game. However, despite the disappointment of
losing, there was enough desire and committment to
suggest that Glenelg will make a strong showing for the
rest of the season. But the SANFL does not award
premiership points for good efforts. Glenelg will need to
do more with the many opportunities generated by ruckman
Matthew Golding and its strong midfeilders if it is to
translate desire and committment into premiership points.

WAKE UP CALL FOR
THE MAGPIES
By Doug Robertson.
Port Adelaide manufactured a grinding 29-point victory
over a tough and committed Glenelg yesterday, but not
before a serious jolt which presented questions about the
Magpies' mental preparations leading into the Alberton
Oval encounter.
If not for the influence of bustling Darryl Poole - who
turned the game Port's way after going into the rack from
half-forward early in the second term - Port might have
succumbed to the relentless pressure exerted by the
tireless Tiger- runners.
But Port's 14.6 (90) to 8.13 (61) business-like victory
was credit to its ability to punish Glenelg for not
sticking to its tight team structure and over-using the
ball in the midfield. Poole's influence in ruck cannot be
over-rated and former Gleneig rover Phil McGuinness was
dangerous near goal while full forward Sam Phillipou
backed up his 10-goal effort last round against Norwood
with 6.2, in a decisive performance.
Seldom yesterday did Port string together the system and
precision it showed against Norwood and few had the
ruthless desperation demonstrated in its Easter effort.
McGuinness kicked the opening goal then Glenelg replied
with three majors - all generated by pushing -forward in
numbers and taking calculated risks.
Port coach Stephen Williams gave his slow-starting
charges the bagging they deserved at the first break and
when they hit back as expected, Glenelg fell away from
its team style. Phllipou eased into the contest with
strong leads and equally impressive marking and Jared
Poulton, Simon Pedler and Tom Carr picked up in defence.
But Port surprisingly resisted the obvious by letting
Glenelgs' miidfielders keep running. Port won but it was
not impressive.
"Agamst Norwood our skills were terrific but
(yesterday) they were disgraceful. It was a wake up
call," Williams said.

Golding and
Poole battle it out
|
The Tigers again have real bite. They had more of the
ball, more scoring shots, laid more effective tackles and
won more positions on the field. Stoic defender Mark
Viska has suspected knee ligament damage to add injury to
insult.
Glenelg can take some heart for the way it manned-up and
how it played accountable football. Nobody took a back
seat. Yet it lost which was a tough lesson and a
miserable return for the Crows teenage ruckman Matthew
Golding, who put in a stellar performance. Golding, 18,
rucked almost all day and thrashed Damien Brown early
before contesting well against Poole.
Golding set up Glenelg's Martin Mellody, Josh Carr,
ex-Sydney reserves wingman James Byrne, Sudiai Cook and
skipper Nick Chigwidden, who used each of his 17 touches
to lethal effect. The tigers easily won the midfield and
their defence was Strong.
Paul Rouvray and Dwaine Kretschmer worked hard and Chad
Comes fought his way into the game against the
close-checking Brian Lees.
Coach Tony McGuinness knows it was a game it could have
won. "Had we made them pay and converted early it
may well have been a closer game," he said.
"You know the better sides are going to come back at
you ... we lost momentum and it became scrappy."
