ROUND EIGHTEEN
Sunday 1st of August.

GLENELG 5.2 11.7 20.11 21.14 (140)
SOUTH 2.1 5.4 6.8 9.9 (63)

Fine conditions, the likes of which are rarely encountered at Noarlunga Oval, afforded Glenelg with a opportunity to score a percentage boosting victory. Glenelg grasped the chance against an extremely dissapointing South Adelaide outfit. Higgins continued his fine form, Josh Carr seemed to be everywhere, whilst a fired up Chad Cornes produced one of his finest efforts.
Injuries to Simon Hele and Martin Mellody, combined with the Tigers failure to really bury South in the last quarter, were the only dissapointments. Glenelg has a tough road home, but victory against the Eagles at Woodville next week would give the club a realistic chance of a top three finish. TIGERS "CAN'T TAKE FOOT OFF PEDAL"

By Doug Robertson
Tough and talented Glenelg kicked a game clear in fourth spot on the SANFL ladder and added much needed percentage while handing South Adelaide a 77-point thrashing in a bruising clash at Noarlunga Oval yesterday.
Glenelg first ran insipid South into submission before half time and then humiliated the Panthers in front of their biggest home crowd for the season - in a clear indication of the differences between the neighboring teams.
The Tigers had winners across the spacious ground and with Chad Cornes (6.0), Justin Scripps (5.0) and teenager Ben McEntee (4.4) in brilliant form they posted their second highest score for the season - five points short of their 20.25 (145) against North Adelaide in April. The sharpness, strong marking and tough work of the ball by the Tiger trio signalled that Glenelg should be capable of stetching any opposition.
The win came at high cost, however, with veteren wingman Simon Hele straining shoulder ligaments in the opening term and half-back Martin Mellodypulling his hamstring in the third quarter for the second time this season. Both will miss this week's big clash with Woodville-West Torrens.
The style in which Glenelg slaughtered South showed another dimension to a unit already noted for its relentless pressure and growing confidence. The Tigers were more free -flowing than at almost any other time of the season and their precise execution and directness cut South to pieces.
Brett Higgins, Nick Chigwidden, Josh Carr, Alistair Burke and Sudjai Cook domunated the midfield and Glenelg's defence repeatedly made the Panthers pay for their second guessing.
Glenelg executed stronger tackles, ran harder at the ball and maintaned the pressure even after South was obviously a beaten outfit midway through the second term.
"A couple of times last week in the second and third quarter we took the foot of the pedal," coach Tony McGuinness said.
"Where we are now and with the sides we're playing in the next four or five weeks we're not going to be able to take our foot of the pedal."
"It's going to take a level of consistency and effort because if you do take your foot of the pedal, you're going to get blown out of the water. I thought bar the last ten minutes of the game we put up a pretty consistant effort."
South,s Ian Pierrie was its only clear winner, firstly on the wing, then when sent back to quieten Cornes in the third term. Clint Draper marked well and looked dangerous at half-forward but South seldom took into attack, leaving coach Ken Applegarth stunned.
"Glenelg came more focussed, they were more dinkum, more committed. They beat us at the hard ball gets, they ran harder, they worked harder off the ball. They did everything like a team I would love to be coaching," he said.
"They put it to us hard and we fell apart. Our tackling was pathetic and I thought what won it for them was their fantastic smothering of the boot. I didn't want (South) doing the second and third thoughts. I wanted them to get it on quickly. We did everything wrong."
Applegarth said he would talk to each player to find out how desperately they wanted to play league football and how hard they would work to lift performances. "We've been selective on some players and their deficiencies. If they're not going to address these deficiencies they simply can't play," he said.
