BAYS BACK IN
HUNT.
By Brett Clancy
Glenelg slammed on seven goals in a blistering yesterday
at the Pros[pect oval to overwhelm North Adelaide 16.10
(106) to 10.6 (66) and charge back into finals
contention.
The Tigers, four points down at half time and
contemplating four losses in a row, built up steam in the
third term, before blowing the game apart with a
withering procession of goals, initiated by dynamic
Sudjai Cook in the 13th minute.
Tough and commited in the first half, the Roosters
yielded badly against a Tiger unit which threw off the
mediocrity of past weeks to reignite their season before
Friday's testing assignment against high-flying Norwood.
The hard-working first half and polished third quarter
pleased coach Tony McGuinness, who praised his charges'
desperation and poise in a must-win game.
"It was a game we had to win and we approached it
that way, we had to stop the slide or the ramifications
would have been horrific," said McGuinness, who
replaced forward Lindsay Smith - struck down with the
'flu - with Alan Bartlett.
The Roosters' tenacious first half assualt ended with
Danny Morton's opportunistic in the tenth minute of the
third term, the last North Adelaide score for the
quarter, before Glenelg went on a rampage.
Cook (4.2) sizzled around the packs across the
half-forward line, Richard Kelly bulldozed a path through
them and Nick Chigwidden and Byrne collected quality
possesions.
The pair were lucky to be playing for different reasons -
Byrne passing a fitness test and getting the green light
from his doctor to play after being concussed last
weekenfd and Chigwidden, after leavingthe side of his
wife Kathryn after she gave birth yesterday morning to a
baby girl.
Matthew Golding showed flashes of brillance during a
strong performance, amassing 24 hit-outs and five solid
marks against high-leaping, promising Rooster Michael
Burford.
Insipsid upfront previously, the Tigers showed plenty of
spark in the forward lines, with Damien Gigney (4.0) a
strong target, after switching from defence, and Simon
Nicholas creative at centre half-forward.
With Cook providing the biggest spark in attack and
smooth moving Simon Hele and impressive Lance Picioane,
the Tigers looked dangerous.
With their defence quelling the early influence of
Brendon Parker (3.0) and Stephen Pech (4.1) the Roosters
struggled to find an avenue to goal and relied to much on
Morton and Chris Naish to conjure goals.
However, there were plenty of positives for the Roosters
in a seesawing first half. Pech stood up when the
Roosters were in danger of losing grip, booting three
morale boosting goals late in the second term - the last
coming on the siren from another strong middle of the
pack grab.
Morton (27 diposals), Troy Lehmann (29) and Naish (21)
were among the busiest.
