ROUND FOURTEEN
Saturday the 3RD
of July.
WEST 6.1 10.8
14.9 19.13 (127)
GLENELG 1.6 3.10 4.11 6.16 (52)
Many Glenelg supporters felt
that their team was disadvantaged by some poor umpiring,
especially in the opening quarter, when West kicked two
goals from highly questionable decisions. This should not
be allowed to mask the fact that Glenelg was completely
outplayed, all day, in every department.
The stats tell the
story- 207 kicks to 174, 113 handballs to 88 and 113
marks to 73. Glenelg had absolutely no system when moving
the ball into their forward zone, all day Glenelg managed
to allow West defenders to take uncontested marks accross
their half back line. This happened on no less than 6
occaisons in the third quarter alone. Those not at the
game might think that 6.16 indicated poor kicking for
goal. This was not really the case, with most of
Glenelg's points resulting from either difficult shots
taken under extreme pressure, or set shots from 40-50
metres that fell in the goal square and
resulted in rushed behinds.
The Tiger outfit is desperatly missing AFL players
Liptak, Jameson and Harwood, none of whom are likely to
return in the near future. Glenelg's best was clearly
Bode who is very likely to be recalled by Port Power.
During the first term Byrne was concussed in an of the
ball "incident"and played no further part in
the match. Cornes was also concussed early in the second
term, this time in a marking contest, and he too was
forced to sit out the rest of the game.
All is not lost for the Tigers, a finals spot is still on
offer, but their mid season form slump must be arrested
quickly, or the promising start to the season will have
been in vain. The match report is extracted from the
"Sunday Mail."
WEST CRUSHES
BAYS IN 75-POINT WALKOVER.
By Brett Clancy
A focussed and fiery West Adelaide blasted Glenelg out of
the contest at the Bay yesterday, crushing the hapless
Tigers 19.13 (127 to 6.16 (52) in a devastating
four-quarter blitz.
The Bloods, criticised for their erratic displays this
season, king hit Glenelg in the first quarter with six
goals to one and then maintaned their classy display
which has shoved them back into finals calculations.
In a hard fought, sometimes spiteful game, West's defence
was watertight, while a fleet of hard running midfielders
bulldozed a path to goals where Dion Myles and Adam
Richardson led the Tiger defence on a merry dance.
There was no weak link in the West Adelaide machine which
drove the ball through the centre corridor and made the
Tigers pay for some shoddy disposal and wayward kicking
for goal.
Bigger cracks emerged in the suspect Glenelg forward line
early, with Chad Cornes, after kicking the side's only
goal in the first quarter, leaving the ground early in
the second quarter after a collision which left the Power
listed forward concussed.
Earlier, midfielder James Byrne was concussed in an
off-the-ball incident while sheparding and sat the game
out on the side lines.
With Cornes gone, and the side's other attacking options
totally nullified by the likes of the rebounding Ed
Richardson (13 marks), Dean Howard, Anthony Banik (25
disposals) and Sam Jones, Glenelg was in major strife.
West had 113 marks, 40 more than Glenelg, and there were
none better than those by Matthew Twomey, who combined
consistently with Clinton Kirey, Matthew Bruhn, Chris
Barrett and Robert Di Rosa.
Significantly, the Bloods increased the tempo after half
time and finished the game with a procession of goals,
banging on five in the last quarter to build on their
percentage and banish the Tigers to three straight
losses.
The four-quarter intensity buoyed coach Michael Taylor,
who described the win as the most consistent performance
this year. "We just put four blocks togethor very,
very well and the ball was shared by every one,"
Taylor said.
"I think the bye freshened them up physically and
mentally... we had to do something to keep in touch with
the (final) five and credit goes to all the players
because it is one of the most convincing wins we have
had."
Glenelg coach Tony McGuinness kept his players locked
away after the game for a tense 20-minute talk.
For Glenelg, there were few winners, with Simon Hele,
Sudjai Cook, Richard Kelly and Matthew Bode the club's
best. Ben Physick skowed promise on debut, but crows
listed ruckman Matthew Golding struggled to impose his
will at any stage and was benched temporarily in the
first quarter.
In a crunching, bruising opening to the first quarter,
West Adelaide slammed on six goals to forge a match
winning 25 point break.
The game flared only four minutes into the contest, with
Dion Myles felled after taking a mark.
He goaled from the resulting 50 metres and, after a
tussle between several players just outside the goal
square, the the umpire awarded [plucked?] a free kick to
Chris Barrett, who goaled. He followed up in the tenth
minute to give the Bloods a 17-point buffer and a perfect
start.
