His face was as Zorikh remembered- pale, calm, refined as all hell. He finished a sentence obviously meant for someone else before turning to Zorikh and saying, "Ah! Mr. Lequidre. That was quick. Prospects usually mull it over with a mental health professional before paying us a call." Balliol grinned. Zorikh had an uneasy feeling that scores of people whom he didn’t know were sitting in their living rooms and laughing at his expense. "I assume then, Mr. Lequidre, that you wish to throw your lot in with us?"
Zorikh’s heart raced, yet he gave his best poker face. "I’ll give it a shot."
"Good man!" Balliol sounded genuinely delighted. "Your contact will call you shortly."
Static.
The phone rang. Zorikh let it ring twice before he picked up. "Zorikh. Hello," Theodora spoke as if she had seen him yesterday.
"Hi."
"I’m glad you contacted us. I’m unable to meet you tonight. Meet me tomorrow at ten in the morning."
"I have work tomorrow. I can’t take off, I called in sick today."
Theodora laughed. "Zorikh, you don’t have to keep that job anymore. You’ll be taken care of. Keep the artist job as an identity."
"Identity? What am I now, friggin’ Batman? What if I don’t stay on?" Zorikh ran his hands over the phone cord.
Theodora’s voice was patient, but amused. "No one quits Zorikh. You may, if you wish, but no one ever wants to. You’ll see." When he didn’t answer for a few seconds, she added, "Call in sick again, don’t people get sick two days in a row?"
"Makes sense." Not having to go back to work again had its draw. "Where?"
