GRENDEL AT LAST

When Guthild returned, Theodora mentioned Hrothgar. “I need to see the King. Would he be at his Hall at this time?”

Guthild thought on this as she refilled Zorikh’s bowl. “Hmm. He’ll be at Heorot doubtless by evening. He’s spent the last days hunting the moors with his companions. It seems that Grendel had returned.”

Zorikh noticed Theodora catch her breath at this. “I imagine he never left.” She said quietly. “I thought Grendel had been cleared of all wrongdoing.”

“The slayings have started again, Sigilind.” Guthild looked at her friend with sympathy. “Worse than before, and you know that Hrothgar’s short sighted as a boar. I don’t believe the accusations either, but…but there you have it. I’d not worry too much Sigilind, you know Grendel can’t be found if he doesn’t want to be.”

Theodora leaned her elbows on the table and stared at the wall. “So, farmers and travelers are being killed again? How can we be sure it isn’t being done by robbers as before?”

“No. Not this time. Hrothgar’s people only…his thanes and hearth companions. But this time they’re being torn apart. I heard from Bass the falconer. One man was ripped nearly in two while still in his mail shirt. It happens at night, on the full moon.”

Theodora’s eyes narrowed. “I really need to speak to Hrothgar.”

The men returned at midday with Frithel proudly holding a brace of rabbits that he had taken with his bow. Guthild prepared the pot.

“Where are you off to?” Osa said with surprise when he saw Theodora and Zorikh preparing to leave. “Frithel has shot a rabbit for each of us!”

Theodora offered her special smile again. Dang, Zorikh thought, I need to learn that smiley thingy. “We’ll return, of course Osa. How can we refuse such a feast, especially when provided by Frithel?”

Guthild fanned the fire. “Frithel’s mother will have much to do with it too, you know.”

Laughing, Theodora paused at the door. “This evening we’ll return. Hopefully with some of Hrothgar’s wine!”
