about: captain beefheart and his magic band, the residents, frank zappa and
lots of (m)others.
* hugh cornwell: wired
(1993, cd, uk, transmission) - feat.robert williams
the big note files carried the "nosferatu" album and the "white room /
losers in a lost land" 7" as hugh cornwell and robert williams (of magic
band fame) collaborations. here's another one. "wired" sounds very pop:
vocals, guitar & drums, backed by some bass, organ. i guess this would do
great on the radio. nice.
* mona lisa overdrive: mona lisa overdrive
(1993, cd, usa, max-bilt 01005-84000-2) - = arthur barrow
in 1993 joe faraci and arthur barrow recorded an album as mona lisa
overdrive. it's a typical early ninetees thing. it's okay, but it's
nothing like arthur barrow's solo releases.
* elektrobus: nedefinitivni
(2001, cd, czech, black point) - incl.various frank zappa
compositions
elektrobus only existed for a couple of years (1975 - 1976) and only did a
handful of concerts. nonetheless, elektrobus was one of the most important
czech rock groups in the seventies. they used a lot of frank zappa
compositions, to which they wrote their own texts. their 1976 release (tape
?) was digitally remastered for cd and rereleased in 2001. it includes:
'king kong', 'jizda vysocinou','i'm the slime' & 'muffin' man'.
* mike keneally: wooden smoke & wooden smoke asleep (9)
(2001, 2cd, usa, exowax records)
mike keneally's latest solo album. it's a 2 cd, limited edition of 2000
copies. as with his previous releases, there will also be a (not limited)
single cd release. first listening was very enjoyable. it has some nice
multi-vocal things.
* gary panter: cola madness
(2000, graphic novel, usa, funny garbage press)
"cola madness" is the latest graphic novel by gary panter. it was drawn in
1983. originally created for a japanese market (but no publisher was
found), the complete album had been on a shelf for almost 18 years.
* deus: nothing really ends
(2001, cd5", bel, island)
released as a teaser for the latest deus compilation album. three versions
(radio edit, album verion & instrumental version)
* lollipoptrain: juniorelectricmagazine
(2001, cd, spain, siesta records siesta 110) - incl.'wowie
zowie' (frank zappa)
teenage british girl going fifties easy listening. very funny. includes
frank zappa's 'wowie zowie'.
* sogenanntes linksradikales blasorchester: sogenanntes
linksradikales blasorchester
(2001, 2cd, ger, trikont cd 0258-2)
- incl. 'ich bin halt die kotze aus deiner glotze' (= 'i'm the
slime') (frank zappa)
the 1977 album "hört, hört" by the german sogenanntes linksradikales
blasorchester has been rereleased on cd (together with their second album
"mit gelben birnen") on the trikont label. it includes a german version of
'i'm the slime' (frank zappa).
* zoogz rift: born in the wrong universe (32)
(2001, cd, usa, sci) - incl a'stinkfoot' (frank zappa) mutation.
zoogz rift's latest album is called "born in the wrong universe". a lot of
familiar names (tom brown, willie lapin, arthur barrow, joe newman & john
trubee) and zoogz shows his best side. my two favorite tracks are the title
track and 'danse of hel'. the latter one is an up-tempo backing-track on
which danny mathys recites frank zappa's 'stinkfoot', in a flemish dialect.
hilarious. i wonder if zoogz knows... despite some weaker moments, this
is a very fine album. zoogz is back.
* zoot horn rollo: we saw a bozo under the sea
(2001, cd, usa, private release)
bill harkleroad, better known as zoot horn rollo, already had an impressive
career. he played with beefheart & mallard; wrote a book called "lunar
notes" about his magic band years and contributed a track to the cd that
accompanied rudy vanderlans's "cucamonga" book. and now there's "we saw a
bozo under the sea", his first solo album. this is an excellent album.
recommended listening. i don't know what he has been doing the last 25
years (the last mallard album is from 1976), but this is really superb
stuff: a contemporary, angular, jazzy, very guitar oriented album. essential
!!
* gitaar plus - november 2001
(2001/11, magazine, nl, hobbies media)
the november 2001 edition of "gitaar plus", a dutch magazine for the
guitarist, has mike keneally on the cover and has a nice interview with him
inside.
in short: the steve vai box (including three cds) should be out real soon.

(frank zappa)
