Before the meeting
- Check the schedule to find out when you are scheduled to speak. In order to derive the most from the Toastmasters educational program, plan to speak from your manual.
- If, for some reason, you have to miss meeting or feel unable to prepare a speech in time, contact the Educational Vice-President and the Toastmaster of the meeting to arrange a substitute.
- Begin preparing speech at least a week before a meeting at which you are scheduled to speak.
- Discuss your speech with the Toastmaster of the meeting and with the member assigned to evaluate your speech. Let them know what specific goals and objectives you intend to achieve.
- Prepare an introduction in advance and give to the Toastmaster of the meeting.
Arriving at the meeting
- Check the room layout to make sure you can see the timing signals and that all props and needed materials are at hand.
- Give your speech manual to your evaluator, and discuss your goals and objectives.
During the meeting
- Listen to the other speakers; do not study your speech notes.
- When introduced by the Toastmaster of the meeting, take control of the lectern, acknowledge the Toastmaster and the audience, and deliver your speech. Try to remain within the time limit.
- At the end of your speech, do not thank the audience; nod and say something like, "Madame Toastmaster" to indicate that you are ready to return control. Do not leave the lectern until the Toastmaster has come to the lectern and taken control.
- During the evaluation portion of the meeting, listen to suggestions for improvement and other comments made about your speech and think about what you can do to improve.
After the meeting
- Get your manual from your evaluator and take time to discuss your speech and any questions you may have about the evaluation.
- Get your Vice President of Education to sign the Record of Assignments in the back of your manual.
