Topicsmaster
Before the meeting
- Prepare interesting Table Topics, preferably on a single theme.
- Ask guest in advance, before meeting begins, if they would like to participate. Explain that their participation is optional. Never embarrass them.
- Check with Toastmaster of the Meeting for a list of meeting participants. These people should not be included in Table Topics unless attendance is low. If you need topic speakers, the order of priority in which to ask members to speak should be: those not participating in any other way, then members of miscellaneous evaluation staff, the evaluators, then speakers and the Toastmaster and General Evaluator. Always choose a member who has had little chance to participate over members who have played a greater role.
During the meeting
- When introduced by the Toastmaster of the Meeting, assume control of the meeting and briefly explain the nature of Table Topics and make sure to mention the time limit (1-2) minutes.
- Keep topic assignments short and to the point. Never allow a topics assignment to run longer than one minute, at worst, and if possible keep the assignment to one or two sentences.
- Include those guests who have agreed to participate at the end of the Topics session, after they have had a chance to see what is expected of them.
- Return control of the meeting to the Toastmaster.
