PROLOGUE
Blue. However did they know that's how I felt? What a perfect colour to dress me in. Such a perfect colour. It brought out my eyes, they say. They, after all, were bluer than the bluest summer sky. They were beautiful eyes. They were eyes that hardly anyone else had.
I hated blue. I hated the colour of my eyes. I hated looking in the mirror and see those eyes staring back at me. I hated the blue things I was dressed in, always to match my twin brother, Edward. I always had to wonder, though, why did we have to match? And why was the colour chosen have to be blue?
I supposed the reason why I hated blue so much was because blue reminded me of misery. Blue reminded me of sadness. And most of all, blue reminded me of her. Her, the woman who'd given birth to us, only to die not very long after. I always blamed her for dying and leaving us. Always. It left me so utterly alone.
And no matter what family I had, or who loved me, I was alone. I was forever and ever alone. I was completely lost in a world without a mother. I was lost in the world with other children who had no mothers, of course. But there were no other children like me around.
No other children I knew had secrets circling them, just within their reach, but too far away to grasp a hold of. I knew the secrets were there. But I had to pull and stretch every muscle in my body just to reach one out of so many. Oh, if only I hadn't wanted to touch those secrets so badly.
