Within one month of arrival, Peter Mansergh, veterinary surgeon and farmer, and James Rolleston, coach builder and farmer (who was also a passenger on the "China", with his wife), together purchased a twenty acre lot in Portion 140 at Merri Creek from John Pascoe Fawkner. In August 1840 this district became known as Pentridge, but was renamed Coburg in 1870.
