James Robertson and his wife Ann (nee Coupar) were christened in Perthshire, Scotland. James in Errol on 30 April 1808 while Ann Coupar was christened in Perth on 11 December 1814. James and Ann were married in Errol, Perthshire on 22 February 1839 and travelled on the India with their two-month old baby Agnes, christened 5 April 1841. Ann's sister Betsey and her husband Alexander Gibb travelled with them. During the confusion of the burning of the India Ann Robertson became separated from baby Agnes and was relieved to find her safe in the arms of the Captain, who had taken her in charge. On arrival in Port Phillip James occupation was listed as "smith" and Ann's as "housemaid". They first lived in a tent on Sydney Road, Campbellfield, and their first boy was christened there in 1845.
