Ocala National Forest--Paisley
Woods (Southeast of Ocala)
Terrain: Singletrack bicycle trails travel through dry, gently rolling pine forest. Hunting: Open to hunting. Call the district office in Umatilla (904-669-3153) to inquire about hunting. To Get There: Take I-4 to SR 46 and head West. Turn right on SR 46A, then left on SR 44, followed by a right on SR 439 and a right on SR 42. Within 3 to 5 miles turn left into the entrance to Clearwater Lake and park at the trail head on the right. These trails are about 60 miles from Daytona.
The Florida Freewheelers, in conjunction with Lake County Rails-to-Trails and the US Forest Service, recently built this 22 mile loop trail connecting Clearwater Lake with Alexander Springs. A shorter loop is available by returning on the opposite leg at the halfway point. Alexander Springs has a concession stand but you will have to pay the entry fee to get in. Water is available at the entry station at Alexander Springs and at the Clearwater Lake campground. The bicycle trail is marked with yellow plastic diamonds nailed to the trees. The spur trail to Alexander Springs at the North end is marked with blue blazes. Do not bike on the adjacent National Scenic Trail marked with orange blazes. (I have not ridden this trail.) |
