Pinellas County

Rails-to-Trails

Terrain:  Paved, flat, and runs nearly the entire length of Pinellas County.  Over 40 miles of paved trails are available, but horses and motorized vehicles are not allowed.  As for off-road, there are no activities worth mentioning for Pinellas County.

To Get There:  You can hop on the trail from just about anywhere in the county and the trail starts and ends near US 19.  For a good North county starting point, take US 19 to the Anclote river.  Turn West on Live Oak or Tarpon Avenue.  For the South endpoint, take I-275 to Pinellas County and to US 19.  US 19 is also known as 34th Street South in St. Petersburg.  The trail starts on US 19 between 8th Avenue South and Fairfield Avenue by Gibbs High School.

Existing and Proposed Bicycle and Pedestrian Trails in Pinellas County

Pinellas Trail near Tyrone Square Mall

The North end of the trail is near US 19 by the Anclote River and the South end of the trail is in St. Petersburg.  Between these two points the Pinellas Trail meanders through the highest population density in Florida and sees pedestrian, roller-blade, and bicycle traffic.  Pets on 6 foot leashes are also allowed.  On certain portions of the trail, major roads have to be crossed so proceed cautiously.  Green station numbers appear every 500 feet, starting with zero at the St. Petersburg trailhead.  This is typical Florida and it can be very hot.  Restrooms, water fountains, and eateries can be found in town or at parks that adjoin the trail.  Bring a water bottle just in case.  Call the Pinellas County Planning Department at (727) 464-4751 for more information.

The Friendship Trail is a bridge turned pedestrian trail.  It is a nice place to cruise at your leisure over Tampa Bay and the trail is adjacent to the southernmost bay bridge, the Gandy.  Formerly, it was used for vehicular traffic until it became obsolete.  You may encounter roller-bladers, joggers, fishermen, and the occasional dolphin swimming nearby!
