Tallahassee (3) Tom Brown Park Terrain: Hardpack trails on moderate grade hillsides. Lots of twists and roots at times. If you're looking for more adventure, there's the BMX track! To Get There: From I-10 exit in Tallahassee and head South on Capital Circle NE. Just past the federal prison turn left (East) and left again at the first intersection, Easterwood Drive. Follow signs to the BMX track to park.
The premiere place to ride in Tallahassee, Tom Brown park truly offers something for everyone. First, the trails. It's a fairly short six miles, broken down into three sections as I see it. Heading in a generally western direction from the BMX area rewards the rider with tight and twisty trails that are fairly flat. If you head in the opposite direction, the trail is wider and the singletrack is easier except for one 7 foot drop/climb that is rideable both ways. These two sections are joined by the third, middle section, which has elements from both other sections. The middle section is the large northern and western area on the map below. It features a few hills with one or two moderately steep ones. There is a "valley," which is fun to drop into and climb out of. The middle section also features twisty singletrack and wide open areas of straight trail.
Intermediate and expert riders are at home on these trails and mountain bike races are held here. Beginners will also do fine and can find their way around these trails without any surprises. The few steep drops and climbs are clearly visible so it should not be a problem for first timers. The middle section also has some bunkers for "hucking" or jumping. These jumps are different than the BMX track. Tom Brown park is a great place for the family, offering a variety of play facilities: tennis courts, paved trails, frisbee golf course, BMX track, R/C car track, softball fields, basketball courts, playgrounds and more. Restroom facilities, pavilions, picnic tables and other multipurpose recreational facilities are available. So bring the whole family!
Munson Hills Terrain: Low lying and wet. Avoid this area during the rainy season. To Get There: From I-10 exit in Tallahassee on Monroe Street (US 27) or Thomasville Road (SR 61). In either case head South. Thomasville Road will intersect Monroe Street and you should head South on Monroe Street. Continue South as Monroe turns into Woodville Highway (SR 363). Park in the St. Marks Historic Railroad State Trail parking lot, but head another mile South on your bike to the trailhead. The Munson Hills loop is fairly challenging over rolling terrain. It's a little over 7 miles long and goes through the Apalachicola National Forest. Halfway through the ride you can take a shortcut, cutting your ride to about 4.3 miles. Red Bug Terrain: Can get sandy during dry spells. To Get There: From I-10 exit in Tallahassee on 319. Head North to the first traffic light and turn left on Timberlane. Turn right on Meridian and head North for about four miles. Turn into the sports complex and the trailhead is on the South side of the park. Tallahassee is unusual in that there are several excellent areas to ride in the state's capital city. Red Bug is mostly flat and features singletrack. Beginners would be more comfortable here than other trails in the area. The trails are short enough to consider doing both Red Bug and Tom Brown on the same day. |
