Have you heard people say, "This is a world where everything must balance and so there must be opposites. Where there is light there must be darkness, where there is good, there must be evil."
I have considered and I cannot accept this theory. Followed, it leads to absurdities. For in this world of opposites we must then say where there is health, there must be sickness, where there is love, there must be hatred, where there is wisdom, there must be ignorance. And then what point is there in pursuing health, love, wisdom, for each brings with it it's equal and opposite shadow of sickness, hatred, ignorance, and we are doomed to experience equal doses of both. Or if I am healthy, must some other person be sick, to create the balance? If I am wise, must another be ignorant? What use then is my health, or my wisdom, if it condemns my brother to sickness or ignorance? Next let us take the matter of good and evil. Is there any use in striving to be good, if an equal and opposite evil immediately springs up to balance it? Then I may say, "This is good, but because it is good, a balancing evil will surely follow, so that this, which is good, is itself evil because this good, by being good, creates an equal and opposite evil." So in this world of opposites even good is suspect, because of the equal evil which accompanies it.
This is what I have learned, that the universe is good, and there is no evil in it. I have learned that the "balance of opposites" theory can be discarded for a more kindly, healthier, more loving and trusting attitude towards the universe. I believe that all creation is in and of the Absolute, and that the Absolute is good, without a single "balancing evil", and that therefore all creation is good. I believe that health is the natural condition of the body, that where there is health, there is no sickness, and that sickness itself is a message, and part of the effort that the body is making to return again to health. I believe that as love grows, hatred shrinks, and finally ceases - hatred is not where love is, how can it be? I believe that as wisdom grows, so ignorance shrinks, so that there is less ignorance where there is more wisdom. I can imagine beings so wise that they do not even need the words wisdom and ignorance, for where wisdom is, ignorance is not. So while the words denoting opposites do have meaning for us because now we experience both health and sickness, love and hate, wisdom and ignorance, yet I believe that we are not doomed to experience these in equal, balancing quantities, neither as individuals, nor as a world. I believe that light, goodness, health, love, and wisdom are within us, and we are constantly learning to manifest more of these. Then tip over the balances, and declare your freedom from them! Pile up the riches that are within you on the good side, until the evil side disappears! Manifest your Original Goodness, your love, joy, creativity, health, and wisdom and break the tyranny of the world of balancing opposites!
