Sumpter on Natural Heroism
The material in the archives was not originally written for a website, but is nevertheless well worth reading.

It was all written in New Zealand, and you will occasionally notice this.
The spirit, your spirit, is a wonderful thing. Your basic nature is divine,
unlimited, glorious, powerful, capable of soaring to unguessed levels of
brilliance and achievement. There is in you, a spiritual requirement then,
for recognition of the heroic, and for heroic action. This is poorly
understood in your current social experience. Some of your psychologists
consider it a problem for some people that they cannot be comfortable
being ``ordinary''. Yet you all know the desire to be socially accepted, and
yet different, in some way extraordinary. Then there is still such a
powerful belief in a (totally mythological) battle between good and 'evil',
that for many to be heroic means being in a bad situation and struggling
heroically to overcome it. The need, the spiritual need, for drama is
interpreted every day in your experience as the drama of bad events,
murders, wars, and horrors of every description.

These are powerful and destructive misunderstandings. To be heroic, in
soul terms, means to sense the greatness of the divinity within you and to
seek to express it in your everyday lives. I will tell you a secret that is not
really a secret. The world is not ordinary, the world is never ordinary, your ordinary life is not ordinary at all, and you, my dear friend are not in any way ordinary. I want you to begin looking at the most seemingly ordinary aspects of your life with the soul understanding of the heroic.

Living in  this world is the heroic venture of a divine being, you, who saw the wonder and the charm, the uniqueness and the opportunity of this special corner of heaven, and was filled with desire to experience its particular benefits, so filled with the power of desire that you were able to create out of thought and a few fleshy building blocks the incredible body in which you entered this world. Every baby born is an affirmation of the rightness of spirit's joining with flesh, an affirmation of the rightness of the world and of a life in it. This joyous affirmation is what makes a baby so wonderful to be near. Yet, without realising it, you reaffirm the rightness of your life in this world in every minute you live, for at deep soul levels every minute you choose whether you will be in the flesh or out of it, whether you will live or die, and if you are reading these words then every minute until this one at least, you have chosen to live.

Remember the wonder of the world, then, every day, remember it is so
desirable so attractive, so valuable an experience to be here that when you
were not flesh your desire to be here gave you the power to take on flesh,
and every minute, your desire, your soul desire, to stay here uses vast
powers to continually recreate the flesh, the body you call your own.

Take time out from your usual point of view, perhaps bogged down in the
so-called petty details of your life, to view it occasionally as if you were an alien from another planet seeing it for the first time, or a person from the distant past or the distant future. How strange and interesting your
seemingly ordinary life looks from those different perspectives. Imagine, if
you will, that you are without a body and with no means to create one.
What dear and special earth experiences would you then miss, and long
for?

And now for yourself, the precious and unique and divine being that has
chosen this extraordinary world to be your sometime home. Exactly as you are now, with all your good qualities and your faults, you are a divine and heroic being. You are the hero or heroine of your own life. No-one else, ever, will have the same experiences that you have, or influence the world in the same way that you do. So be fully the hero or heroine that you are.  Try living heroically. Remember you are the hero or heroine as you eat your meals, have a shower, wash the dishes, go to work, speak to others.  Do not do yourself out of the full richness and flavour of your life
experience by ignoring or forgetting your true nature and its heroic quality.

You need, it is a spiritual requirement, you must have heroic drama in
your life. Any being which is denied this, or denies it to itself, languishes,
and does not fully live. Caged animals often suffer from this lack, and
‘People do not live by bread alone’ it reminds us in the Bible. But this
necessity, the need for drama, does not have to involve anything
unpleasant.

True drama means sensing the greatness within and acting on it. True
drama means standing up for the values and quality of life you know to be
right. True drama means exploring your capabilities and making the most
of them. True drama is a child's first step, or an adult conquering a
difficult driving manoeuvre, or a teenager leaving home. True drama is
trusting the spirit within and acting upon its guidance, bravely, often
without knowing what the results will be in your complex and often
confusing world. You can be proud of yourself, and shout from the
spiritual hilltops when you bake a delicious cake, or play an excellent
game of chess, or try the untried and tackle the unknown, or in any way
bravely, heroically, energetically, go beyond your own previous
achievements, knowledge or experience. Be daring, then, be bold, be
heroic. Look everyday for pleasant, wonderful, exciting, ways to express
your spiritual greatness. If you do this with enthusiasm and understanding
you will no longer need to create unpleasant dramas for yourself, simply to fulfil your soul requirement for heroism and drama.
