It's In My Alabaster Box
Vernetha Mims 2000

There was a woman with an alabaster box filled with her precious ointment, which she anointed the head of Jesus just before his death. When she broke open her alabaster box, the aroma filled the house until it upset some who knew by its distinctive fragrance, it was expensive ointment and they became indignant saying that the woman was being wasteful; Mark 14:3.

An alabaster stone was a frail breakable stone that had no value and used for making unattractive boxes, not to draw too much attention to thieves. That made it easier to hide their precious treasures inside the boxes. The woman was said to be a sinner or prostitute, pressed her way through during Passover, as Jesus was among the men (Passover was during a time when only the men ate together).  As she came with her most precious treasure anyway, and blessed Jesus. Even though it was murmured about her being wasteful with the expensive ointment, Jesus intervene to say "she did a good deed and where ever the gospel is preached through out the world, her deed will be remembered and praised." (So only what you do for Christ will last).

Just as the woman and her alabaster box, inside the hearts of man God to conceals his precious treasures. His power and glory holds a much higher value.  Even higher than expensive ointment. Yet having a distinctive aromatic fragrance that attracts (anointing), drawing attention to his Almighty.  For without his power and glory, we are nothing but weak and earthen vessels. (2Cor 4:7) but we have this treasure in earthen vessels that the Excellency of the power may be of God and not of us.

No matter how much anointing we have to deliver his word, the distinctive fragrance like a sweet flavor, supersedes us and draws attention to God. With our weak and frail bodies, God writes his word in our "hearts" as his precious treasure.  After we've gone through our turmoil’s he breaks open our boxes and the people will smell the fragrance and look at us differently wondering why are we still here after what they have seen us go through.  They will wonder how did we do the impossible; as the more we go through the stronger the fragrance. They will observe us as they know a person, frail as we are, couldn't have made it through the things we went through and become the head and not the tail.  They will scratch their heads and wonder how we can have such tenacity to go through fire and not be burned. Drown in financial debt and emerge and become the lender not the borrower.  When God breaks open our boxes, the enemy will get indignant and try to rob, kill and destroy what is in us.  But our defense will be, "trouble on every side and not distressed, perplexed, but not in despair, persecuted but not forsaken, cast down but not destroyed; 2cor 4:8-9. When the world asks how we made it, we can simply tell them, “It’s in my alabaster box”.
