ESPN's Global Football League

Week 6

Reviews - Wednesday, October 8th
by Carlos Curro, Sao Paulo Travelers owner

Great matches and Monday Night Football again was an exciting way to finish Week 6 of action on Global Football League. Let's check out the results:

The Lounge Lizards 32 vs. 51 Screaming Meanies
New London Wacker Boyz II 41 vs. 57 New York Freaky Fat Cats
Sao Paulo Travelers 44 vs. 33 Da Kine Hawaiian
Sao Paulo Big Passaros 37 vs. 51 Kauai Rainbows
Crown City Thorns 65 vs. 76 Bloody Sabbaths

(NFL Bye teams on Week 6: Atlanta, Carolina, St. Louis, San Francisco)

The Lounge Lizards 32 vs. 51 Screaming Meanies

The Lounge Lizards came into this game as the favorite team to win this first place battle, but the Screaming Meanies scored 51 points and defeated the Lizards in a battle that gave Lizards' fans some hope going into Monday Night, but Meanies RB Terrell Davis was just unstoppable.

Davis scored 20 fantasy points, rushing for 171 yards and scoring twice, boosting the Meanies lead on Monday. The Lizards were hoping the Patriots D could give them the come from behind win, but they were well below other season performances.

RB Raymont Harris had a nice game for the Lizards with 10 points. They've now lost only for the second time this season, but they still mantain a first-place tie position in the West and overall in GFL. For the Meanies, this was a very important win, giving them solo first place in the East at 4-2.

The Lizards definitely missed a great performance from QB Jeff George, and their replacement kicker Pete Stoyanovich scored only two points.

New London Wacker Boyz II 41 vs. 57 New York Freaky Fat Cats

This was a very important game between two teams that are trying to get up quickly in the standings after slow starts. In the "Boyz-Cats" battle, the New York Freak Fat Cats took advantage of their running game, led by one of their backs, Antowain Smith, the emerging rookie for the Bills, and a great rush performance by QB Jeff Blake.

The New London Wacker Boyz II suffered from a "turnover-plagued" QB Vinny Testaverde, who threw two INT's and had also two fumbles, which shadowed his 3-TD perfomance. And with RB Terry Allen still struggling to get yardage and TD's on the ground (he did score on a reception), WR Cris Carter was the only bright spot for them with 9 points.

And in the battle of Minnesota WR's, the Cats Jake Reed couldn't match Carter's performance, but it didn't matter, as the Cats benefited from their other players. Besides Blake and Smith performances, TE Eric Green had a huge game for Baltimore with 8 points. The Packers D also helped with 11 points.

With this win, the Cats secure solo second place in the East at 3-2-1, while the Boyz (3-3) drop to third place in the West.

Sao Paulo Travelers 44 vs. 33 Da Kine Hawaiian

The Sao Paulo Travelers needed a win desperately, as they've dropped two straight and their offense was struggling. They faced the last place team in GFL, the Da Kine Hawaiian, who won only once this season. Although it was a close game, the Travelers finally caught a break, as their RB's found the endzone three times this week.

Travelers RB's Eddie George and Ricky Watters rebounded from sub-par performances in the last three weeks, scoring 11 and 18 points respectively. Even with the receivers continuing to struggle, they managed to get a 7 point lead into Monday Night, where the Hawaiian didn't have any more players, and the Travelers had John Elway.

Although Elway tried his "best" to help the Hawaiian with two early INT's, he bounced back to render them their fifth loss of the season in six tries. The 1-5 Hawaiian had nice game by their backs, Jerome Bettis and Mike Alstott, but it just wasn't enough. QB Steve Young, who had a bye this week, is a key part of the offense, and they just can't get anywhere wthout him in the lineup. They've now the worst record in GFL, last place postion in the West. The Travelers improve to 4-2, tied for first in the same West with the Lizards.

Sao Paulo Big Passaros 37 vs. 51 Kauai Rainbows

After a 90 point perfomance last week, it was expected that the Sao Paulo Big Passaros would give the Kauai Rainbows (last place in the East) a big and easy ride. But the Rainbows pulled a big upset, breaking Sunday Night tie game on Monday and giving the Passaros their third loss of the season.

The Rainbows and Passaros were tied at 31 after Sunday's games. QB Brett Favre and WR Derrick Alexander led the way for the Rainbows, while RB Bam Morris was key to the Passaros. But, on Monday Night, the Rainbows had two Denver players, WR Rod Smith and TE Shannon Sharpe, along with the Broncos D; the Big Passaros had only QB Drew Bledsoe.

As the Broncos were all over the Patriots, the Rainbows pulled up this huge win, which is only their second in the season. The Broncos Denfese and WR Rod Smith really came through on Monday, while Drew Bledsoe had a very weak performance. Too bad for the Passaros, who are now tied for third place in the East at 3-3, while the Rainbows improved to 2-4, still last place in the same East, but they can be a game way from third place with a win next week and some favorable results.

Crown City Thorns 65 vs. 76 Bloody Sabbaths

If you're looking for a team on the winning edge, look no further. The Bloody Sabbaths captured their second straight win, and as they got a tie three weeks ago, they are on the rise on the West as well as the New York Freak Fat Cats are in the East. The victim this week was the Crown City Thorns, who played very well, but couldn't match the 76 points scored by the Sabbaths.

The Thorns suffered from a struggling Curtis Martin on Monday Night. But they had some great players and great performances in this week, as QB Mark Brunell rebounded solid with 3-TD passes, and WR Antonio Freeman helped with 14 points. K John Hall added 12, while the Steelers Defense was simply amazing, as they scored a week high 17 points. So, how could they possibly lose this game?

Well, the Sabbaths are really on the rise, and their players are VERY hot! Check out QB Kordell Stewart performance: 25 points! The versatile RB Napoleon Kaufman couldn't find his ground game this week, then he adds 100 yards through air - and a TD, which leads to an 11 point performance. WR Andre Rison added 10, K Richie Cunningham 9, and the Jaguars D added more 11. 76 points for the hot offense of the Sabbaths, an 11 point victory in a big shoot-out.

The Sabbaths improved to 2-3-1 (4th in the West), while the Thorns are now tied for third place in the East, with a record of 3-3.
