In 1997, Virgin Records began
a new label, Innocent. Cheryl Robson, formerly of Chrysalis Publishing, had
an idea to develop a solo female artist for Innocent, as not many had come
out of the UK in quite some time. Luckily for Billie, the managing
director of Innocent, Hugh Goldsmith, approved the idea. Hugh had a copy
of MW magazine on his desk in August of '97, and inside was a large advertisment
for Smash Hits. Can you guess who was posing in the photo, holding the Smash
Hits CD? That's right, it was Billie Piper. And that's where it all
started.
Hugh saw the advertisment with Billie,
and he thought she had some attitude. So they got her in to give a little
song, a cover of R. Kelly's Get Out. Robson loved Billie's
vocals, and just before Christmas that year, Billie signed a long-term
contract with Innocent.
Virgin brought in a great writing duo- Jim Marr
and Wendy Page, who not only wrote half Billie's songs but also produced
her album. Billie did have some input however, co-writing Love
Groove with Jim and Wendy. Several other writers contributed to
Billie's repertour, and the entire combination sealed her career-
with her first two songs hitting No.1 in her own country.
And, as they say, the rest is
history.
