From the humblest of beginnings, the charismatic
singer-actress-dancer has forged a career that's remarkable not just for
its diversity, but also for the level of success she's managed to achieve
in her various endeavors. While it's true lots of entertainers have dabbled
in both music and film, relatively few have attained accomplishments comparable
to those of Lopez. That she's a relative newcomer to both arenas makes
her success all the more impressive.
Born in the Bronx, New York, on July 24, 1970,
Jennifer Lopez knew from an early age that she wanted to be in show
business. Encouraged by her mother (a kindergarten teacher) and her father
(a computer operations specialist for an insurance firm), Lopez began
taking dance lessons as a preschooler. Throughout her childhood and into
her mid-teens, Lopez divided her time between Catholic school and
small roles in regional theater, which saw her taking on roles in such musicals
as Oklahoma and Jesus Christ Superstar. Her theatrical endeavors also afforded
her the chance to travel to abroad, where she sang and acted in several musical
productions in Japan and Europe.
Released in June of 1999, Lopez's debut
album, On the 6, achieved platinum status within two months of hitting
record stores. Borrowing its title from the subway train that used to shuttle
Lopez and her mother into downtown Manhattan, the collection of songs
features a mix of hip-hop, R&B, Latin funk, and shimmery ballads. Employing
a team of producers that included Emilio Estefan, Rodney Jenkins, and Combs,
Lopez deliberately steered away from making a straight pop record,
preferring instead to explore more eclectic sounds.
