Hull Friends of the Earth General Meeting Tuesday 1 June 2004
20.00 at Recycling Unlimited, 151 Newland Avenue Hull
13 Members present, apologies from two others
1 Money matters, signing of cheques, and so on.
2 Spring Green Fair: successful, enjoyed by all, special thanks to the musicians.
Takings the same as the last November Fair, but profit bigger because the new venue is cheaper.
3 November Green Fair: agreed to go ahead for 20 November, same place.
4 New venue for meetings: required because fire inspection of RU declared upstairs room
unsuitable for disabled egress in emergency. Newland Residents' Pop-In probably same problem,
and in any case inconvenient because committee member needed to open and lock up. Hilary to
check out Newland Primary, Arthur to check out Bev Rd Community Centre, Stephen to inquire about
Pearson Park Pavilion (contacted today: Park Ranger will get back to me).
Pubs not reliable because meetings likely to be ousted in favour of more boozy gatherings
(but I'll inquire about the Editorial tonight).
5 Bike Week: Sunday 20 June 2004. Meet in Pearson's Park at 10 am, on the benches opposite
the rose gardens. Riding to Rise to visit an organic market garden (no loos on site).
David has ridden the route and confirmed it is suitable. Bring picnic lunch.
6 Casino in the Park. Stephen to write to Hull Mail. Will write if and when planning application
submitted.
7 The shredder scheme. This should not be referred to please as the Garden Waste Collection
Scheme until we can find a snappy acronym. So far, "CARGO"
(collection and recycling of gardeners' organic waste), "GREEN"
(garden refuse ecologically and efficiently neutralised), NALGO
(Newland allotments local gardening operation). Suggestions to Chrys.
8 Garden Waste Collection Scheme: monthly report submitted. Quantities were going up.
9 The new shredder. It was reported that WOW had cancelled the order. Agreed that in spite of
some very real practical problems, the HFOE scheme could run with its present equipment on
the basis of composting small stuff, shredding some medium stuff, and getting Council to chip
the really large waste. Pallets were available and the Council allotments officer had agreed.
In the long term, compost could be used to encourage novice gardeners to take small sections
of plot. There remained the problem of the area committee grant. Chrys to draft a letter
explaining events beyond our control necessitated a rethink, and that we were working on an
improved project.
10 Noted that David did not want his responsibilities increased. His bid to Tree Council for
150 GBP backed by the group.
11 Lord Mayor's Parade 10 July. The milk float is 3.5 metres long. Theme agreed: healthy food.
Hilary, Alan T, Oliver, David to be nucleus of Parade sub-group.
12 Film "The Day after Tomorrow". See Ian's letter in HDM. Agreed the film's presentation of
climate change needed correction and probably a convenient peg to hang comment on. Ian to rough
out ideas for press release.
13 CHEF: trying to relaunch itself. Agreed that Data Protection considerations preclude
giving CHEF our lists of contacts but we could send stuff out on their behalf
(charge for this service not discussed).
14 Avenues Open Gardens Sundays 4 & 11 July. Hilary setting up stall on Victoria Avenue.
Volunteers requested (Debbie was the first).
15 Use of HFOE shredder by outsiders: health and safety and public liability considerations
rule this out.
(The last suggestion under para 7 is a joke, but I couldn't find anything suitable to make UNISON.
