The Bell vs Skulking Loafers
The fifth game of the season is against The Bell at U.C.C.ground. The Loafers have now won 4 out of 4 and are on a roll. The fixture against The Bell goes back several years now,to the happy days of Keith Dixon and The Rainbow Tavern,The Bell originated from The Rainbow and during Keith`s tenure of The Rainbow as landlord, the Loafers were also to be found skulking during opening hours,as this was our base for a couple of years. In those days it was not unusual to play for both teams and maybe another during the course of a week of evening fixtures, and at the weekend play for two villages on the Saturday and Sunday.During this period Keith Dixon`s tours became famous and I have fond memories of playing away for the Rainbow at weekends. Notably the New Forest tour where we visited a brewery first and sampled the delights of the product,on to the Hopback brewery in Salisbury and then on to the game, training on fish and chips along the way, 7pints into the day and the game still to play.It was a shock, I can only presume to the opposition, of our thirst for life, that they succumbed to our talents both on and off the field that day.It heralded a new fixture on the list that of The Cuckoo, who were to visit Chichester the following year and vica versa for years to come it was the only time that The Cuckoo were to be beaten, and I can only give thanks and praise to the Hopback Brewery of Salisbury and Bunce`s Brewery of Netheravon.Blah blah blah.So to the game today the old tradition of two overs each and batsmen to retire at 25 still holds with the Bell, this gets all envolved so there are no shirkers here. The Loafers batted first and steady runs were accumulated with all the top order into double figures well almost. McDougal top scored and had to retire the innings was notable for a flurry of wickets for Bob Hughes who manged to take 4 wickets in his spell of two overs, and a late burst of aggressive batting from Nick Pennicott to get the total to 113.In reply The Bell were to come up against a very good alround performance from The Loafers, with only two batsmen making double figures as this was late into the innings the Loafers seemingly were in control but you can never tell and on many occasions we have pulled defeat from the jaws of victory. On this occassionthe batting of Ray and Brian were not quite enough so 5 out of 5 for The Loafers now. A splendid game in good spirit was enjoyed by all and liquid refreshment and a bit of nosh were partaken back at the Bell.
