| US Flag Afghan Created by Tam Cummings July 2002 Materials Worked in worstead weight yarn ( I will update this list when I pull out the yarn wrappers later today) 2 – skeins 8 oz Red Heart ART E300 Color 0376 Burgundy 1 – Caron One Pound skein 501 Bright White 2 – Navy blue Bernat Berella "4" color 08965 50 – star buttons or crocheted stars Size M afghan hook or crochetnit hook, flexible hook or two of the same size Size 55” x 42” (almost, just short off 42”) With Red, Chain 151 Work 8 rows of afghan stitch in red, for starting chain I worked in the back loops for a better finish. Change colors for stripes on the pick up loops row. At the end of row 8 change colors to white and work 8 rows. Alternate colors until you have 6 stripes completed, you will end with white. Attach Red and work 81 stitches in red and 69 in blue. You will do this for 8 rows of red and then with 8 rows of white. You will have a vertical bar in blue when changing colors, change colors on the pick up row. When working row off, when you have two loops of blue left work those off using red and finish taking row off with red. I always twisted the two colors at the time of changing colors. Alternate red and white colors till 7 more stripes are completed, ending with a red stripe. Be sure to continue working the blue block along with these stripes. NOTE: Watch your gauge as you go, I found the I tightened up after a couple stripes. I believe using two hooks would be better and would help prevent this. Stars – You will need 50 stars to add to the afghan. I am still working on that part, I am awaiting some star buttons in the mail. I will most likely design some stars to go with this pattern. Yarn note - I had about half a skein of the burgundy left over. I had left over white yarn but may use it to make stars. I used ALL of the Blue yarn, nothing left over! |
