Man’s Winter Hat
Designed by Tammy (Tam) Cummings in 2001

Size J afghan hook
3 oz worstead weight yarn (need to double check amount yet)

Note:  decrease – I decreased in this pattern when I took the loops off of the hook. To decrease when it is the 1st st of the row - yarn over and pull through 2 loops instead of the normal 1 loop, all other decreases yarn over and pull through 3 loops.

To start:  ch 75, pull up loops in 2nd ch from hook and each across.

Row 1 – 18:  work the afghan stitch across (If you need a bigger hat add rows here). 74 sts
(after making this a second time, for man's hat add about 8 more rows to make 26 rows instead of 18)

Row 19:  work the afghan stitch and Decrease 2 sts, work 20 sts, decease 2 work 20 sts dec 2 work 19 sts decrease 2 sts.

Row 20: work the afghan stitch and Decrease 2 sts, work 18 sts, decease 2 work 18 sts dec 2 work 15 sts decrease 2 sts.
Row 21: work the afghan stitch and Decrease 2 sts, work 14 sts, decease 2 work 15 sts dec 2 work 15 sts decrease 2 sts.

Row 22: work the afghan stitch and Decrease 2 sts, work 12 sts, decease 2 work 12 sts dec 2 work 11 sts decrease 2 sts.

Row 23: work the afghan stitch and Decrease 3 sts, work 6 sts, decease 3 work 6 sts dec 3 work 7 sts decrease 3 sts.

Row 24:   work the afghan stitch and Decrease 3 sts, work 2 sts, decease 3 work 2 sts dec 3 work 3 sts decrease 3 sts.

Row 25:  work the afghan stitch and Decrease across

Row 26:  work the afghan stitch decrease 5 times

Fasten off.  Matching rows with right sides togher sew up to form the cap.  On the second hat I slipped stitched up the open end by putting the hook through the vertical bars on the row ends and slip stitching up the side, this layed nice and flat and the seem barely showed

Fold the bottom up  and press flat, this fold can be as big or as little as you would like, or you can let it roll up for a lady’s hat.

I was asked via e-mail for a man's hat similar to the hat towel topper, this is what I came up with.   The hat turned out nice and is great if you are like me and get dizzy crocheting in circles all the time, no circles on this pattern.  My 10 year old daughter swiped the hat on me this morning LOL, she didn't give her brother a chance at it.  She only asked that I make her one in purple and my other daughter wants one in yellow.  I guess I have some crocheting to do
