ASEAN, Australia fund scholarships for distance education
The Association of South East Asian Nations Committee on Culture and Information (ASEAN-COCI) and Australia through the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and ScreenSound Australia have approved to fund 20 scholarships for distance education on film and video preservation training in the year 2000.
This training course was developed by the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) and UNSW and will include audiovisual management, preservation, and conservation of audiovisual materials, and advanced audiovisual and multimedia management. One training course per fiscal year will be implemented by ASEAN-COCI and Australia on a cost-sharing basis in coordination with SEAPAVAA which will serve as technical support to the project.
The project is expected to strengthen national capabilities in AV archiving through basic and advanced training programs made widely accessible on a continuing basis to as many regional archival officers as possible at the least possible cost.
The project will be jointly undertaken by three institutions to constitute the management team namely the PIA, the UNSW, and the NFSA.
As part of the team, PIA will coordinate the requirements of the project: coordinate the selection of participants; monitor the course's progress; evaluate the course vis-a-vis the project objectives; and prepare the report. Meanwhile, UNSW and NFSA will manage and deliver the course through the internet.
During the 34th ASEAN-COCI working group meeting, it was agreed that the ASEAN-COCI will sponsor 10 participants, and UNSW also 10. Each ASEAN member country will be allotted two grantees each to the training. A candidate for scholarship will be screened according to the following criteria:
- works in an audiovisual archive or similar organization;
- possesses an undergraduate degree or has considerable management experience in an audiovisual or similar setting;
- is proficient in reading/writing English;
- has access to a computer and the internet;
- is prepared to commit at least eight to 10 hours per week to their studies; and
- has the capacity to contribute significantly to furthering the profession in their country or demonstrate how the knowledge acquired would be applied in their archive or professional situation and be shared in developing their colleagues.
Enrolment and participation to the course is scheduled on March to June 2000. Further inquiries about the project may be addressed to:
