VIETNAM:
VFI signs mutual benefit contract
In early 1999, the Vietnam Film Institute (VFI) signed a contract with Progress Film Verleih, a German company, in order to expand the accessibility of Vietnamese films.
Under this contract, Progress Film Verleih agrees to provide VFI technical training in film preservation as well as equipment to transfer films onto other formats and materials (film, video, or laser disk). VFI, on the other hand, gives Progress Film Verleih the authority to contact interested parties and profit from the sale of the VFI film collection, copies of which can be made at the VFI.
Vietnam's documentary films have a significant role not only in the history of Vietnam film making but also in the context of the historical development in the world in recent years. Between 1960 and 1970, around 30 Vietnamese documentary films won gold and silver medals in international film festivals held in Moscow, Tasken, Lepzig, Nante, and others. To date, documentary films on the Vietnam war and the national culture has been much sought after by international film makers and television programers.
After the agreement with the Progress Film Verleih, several interested clients have already visited the VFI to look at their film collection.
