PHILIPPINES:
Restored film classics on primetime TV

Film classics on primetime? Yes if the Philippine Society of Film Archivists (SOFIA) and the Advertising Foundation of the Philippines (Ad Foundation) will have their way. The two recently signed an agreement to jointly undertake a project titled "The Golden Films of Philippine Cinema", a series of TV specials featuring old, restored, and outstanding Filipino movies.

The project is geared to promote public awareness on the SOFIA film search and restoration projects as well as showcase Filipino creativity and value-oriented Filipino movies. It will also generate funds to support the Ad Foundation and its developmental projects, particularly the Philippine Advertising Library and the creation of an endowment fund.

The signing was held at Dusit Hotel Nikko on 1 July 1999. Signatories included Ad Foundation treasurer and finance committee chair Arnedo Lucas of the Road Runner, Inc.; SOFIA president Josephine Atienza of the ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation; incumbent Ad Foundation chair Antonio Samson of the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company; SOFIA board of director member Belina SB. Capul of the PIA, and Mary Del Pilar, SOFIA secretary and project officer. Ad Foundation officers, trustees, project officers, and other officials witnessed the signing.

SOFIA is an association of Filipino film archivists and experts from the academe, government, cultural institutions, and private organizations whose primary aim is to collect, preserve, manage, and provide access to the nation's audiovisual heritage. The society is currently undertaking an active search for and restoration of Filipino films as part of the Philippine cultural heritage.

The Ad Foundation is a social development institution composed of 16 corporate founding pillars, 10 association members, academe, and other members from the advertising and various media. It is primarily concerned on values education, industry development and other endeavors along national development goals.
