Andy Hogue Spouse: Zheng Fangjie Children: Katherine Beatrice Hogue - 2 years - her great grandmother's name Address: Beijing, China Fangjie works as a real estate agent in Beijing and looks after our apartment. We both enjoy traveling but have less time than ever for it now. A few years back we went all over China by everything including a motorcycle with sidecar - everything except airplane. Katie plays all day and is looked after mostly by her grandma. She repeats English but speaks mostly Chinese. She loves repeating "Summertime" when I sing it. I work for a business consulting company which has been associated with some 4 billion USD in investment and trading in China over the past 18 years. We work mainly with American clients although we have one Swiss client company of longstanding. I cycle as often as I can but that's about the only activity I can make time for. I read a fair amount as well but time is difficult to come by. I sometimes go to lunch at a Taiwan-invested doujiang and you tiao fast food restaurant. The noodles and baozi are all pretty much Taiwan style. I have passed through Xiamen a few times and it might as well be Taiwan in many ways, especially Gulangyu, the little island off of Xiamen. Also, when I am in Guangzhou I sometimes have a chance to go to restaurants that have Taiwan dishes. It's not where I go that counts; it's what I eat. I maintain contact with a few people from Morrison and from the class of '82. There are actually more than a few MAC grads in China. They are not all our contemporaries, of course. I may return to Taiwan at some point, but they really changed on us quite a bit over there, didn't they? And most of my friends are gone as well. There are better places to go now. If I returned I would go to the places that have changed least, if there are any places like that. In the late 80's, I visited Penghu and found the people to be great and the place most relaxing. All in all, I suspect western Sichuan and places in Yunnan and beaches in the northeast hold the most for me in terms of the trappings that I miss most about Taiwan. And, don't forget the Japanese element to Taiwan culture. For that, the obvious option is to go to Japan. I suspect the thing that would surprise you most is how little I've changed. I try to have a good laugh at as much as possible that goes on. And when that is not possible, I keep my own counsel. |
