The next version of
Windows for clients and servers. With the client
version expected in 2006 for businesses and 2007 for
consumers and the server version in 2007, Vista
(code named Longhorn) adds numerous features,
including improved security and advanced multimedia
capabilities. Vista also includes Trustworthy
Computing (Palladium) and greater support for
digital rights management. PCs running Vista require
more memory than Windows XP. At least 1GB is
recommended, with 2GB being a safer bet. The client
version of Vista will be available in six versions
(see
Windows Vista versions).
New User Interface - Aero and WPF/Avalon
Once again, the Windows user interface changes with
the new "Aero" interface. Elements have a more
sculpted look, which are based on Vista's Windows
Presentation Foundation (WPF) graphics subsystem.
Formerly code named "Avalon," WPF supports 3D vector
graphics.
Enhanced Searching and File Management
Vista speeds up the indexed file searching in
Windows XP and enables results to be stored in a
virtual folder that is updated automatically if
files are moved. The search also extends to
syndication feeds, and developers can employ the
search capability in their own programs to enhance
functionality.
New Document Interchange Format - XPS
Vista supports the XML Paper Specification (XPS)
document format. Formerly code named "Metro," XPS
provides a way for digital signatures and digital
rights to be applied to documents. XPS also keeps
the page layout intact from computer to computer,
similar to Adobe's PDF format.
Built-In Web Services - WCF/Indigo
Vista includes Windows Communication Foundation (WCF),
a Web services-oriented messaging system, formerly
code named "Indigo."
New Programming Interface
WinFX is the Vista programming interface that
supersedes the Win32 API.
Developers Saw It in 2003
In October 2003, the first pre-beta of Vista (then
Longhorn) was given to attendees of the Microsoft
Professional Developers Conference (PDC). A second
release was given out at the WinHEC conference in
May 2004. The first public beta was released in July
2005.
Downsized in 2004
Windows Future Storage (WinFS) is a storage
subsystem originally scheduled for the first release
of the Vista client. Using a relational database on
top of the NTFS file system, WinFS allows users to
combine heterogeneous data such as files, folders,
e-mail and contacts into collections that can be
viewed together (see
WinFS).
In 2004, Microsoft announced that WinFS would not be
included in Vista's first release, but in a
subsequent one. It also said that WFP, WCF and WinFX
could be added to Windows XP and Windows Server
2003. The ability to upgrade earlier versions of
Windows with Vista features took a lot of steam out
of the anticipation of Vista. See

Mobile Workforce
for Dummies
Our Server
Pages 76
(by Allen Wyatt)
This book examines the changing workplace and shows how new technologies and
demands have coupled to create a workforce that is more mobile than at any time
in the past. Organizations are now driven to discover new ways to increase
responsiveness and productivity. Learn how developing a meaningful mobility
strategy for your organization — one that embraces the technologies and meets
the demands — can help you fulfill the needs of both your workers and clients.
What Is Mobility? Mobility means providing universal access to the communication
tools, information, and applications you rely on to be productive — regardless
of where
you are or what device you have access to at the
time.
The building blocks of unified communication are
• Calling and conferencing management
• Presence
• Messaging management
• Contact and information management
• Personal efficiency management
With these tools, you can access voice, e-mail, and fax messages from one
mailbox; dial one
number to reach associates, whether they are at the office or somewhere else;
and enjoy the
same communication features wherever you are working — on the road, at home, or
in the office.

VoIP
Security For Dummies
Our Server
Pages 68.This Avaya limited edition of VoIP
Security For Dummies shows how risks are identified, analyzed, managed,
and minimized in your converged voice and data networks. Find out how
security best practices — and Avaya products and services — can make
your VoIP network as secure as a traditional telephone network. What is
the truth about VoIP security? Finding the right partner
that delivers secure IP telephony — while leveraging
existing security investments — is the key.
There is no single “right way” to do VoIP security — it may
require “ground-up” design, or it may require only an
upgrade here or there. It makes good business sense to apply
security holistically across the enterprise for both voice
and data. The challenge is finding the right way to make an
environment as secure as possible for the least possible
cost and effort. Avaya products utilize best-of-breed
security design and implementation that integrate with
existing security services in small and large businesses.
Avaya Global Services provides expert advice for small
business and world-wide enterprises, and brings Avaya’s
depth of expertise to bear on any company’s VoIP security
needs. Explore the possibilities at
