Pele's League Week 8 Review - October
23rd Week 8 in Pele's League showed some great matches and some important victories. The Randolph Blue Devils got their second win of the season over the Sao Paulo CCM, who have been struggling bad lately. The CCM (2-6) dropped four in a row, and they miss RB Terry Allen a lot. The Blue Devils (2-6) won 60-34, thanks to good performances by QB Mark Brunell and the New York Giants defense. Both teams are tied in the standings, 8th place positions. The Sao Paulo Hard Plays got a very important victory over the Oporto Eagles, 56-39, despite a (now) non-costly mistake by coach Luis Curro, starting the injured Dave Brown at QB. The Hard Plays (7-1) benefited from superb games by WR Terrell Owens, RB Jerome Bettis and the Carolina Panthers defense. The Eagles (5-3) tried to counter with 10 points from QB Vinny Testaverde and more 10 by RB Ricky Watters, but they mistakenly started WR Jake Reed, who had a bye. The Eagles are in fourth place, while the Hard Plays are tied for first. They are also in a huge winning streak, four in a row. The Sao Paulo 55ers were able to maintain top place position, tied with the Hard Plays, by smashing the PIMP C's REAL G's, 72-40. key players for the 55ers (7-1) were QB Steve Young, WR Andre Rison and the always reliable RB Terrell Davis. The REAL G's (4-4) had a nice 15 point performance from QB Drew Bledsoe, but coach Charles Mcquibban started the injured RB Tiki Barber, who did not play. And with RB Antowain Smith's struggle on Monday Night, the running game was completely ineffective, giving the 55ers a confortable 32-point win. The REAL G's are now in fifth place. A very hot team in the league is the Ithaca Isolators, who defeated the Sao Paulo Golpes Baixos, 68-39. The Isolators (6-2) continue to have an impressive attack, best in Pele's League, and they're only one game behind the league's top two teams. Their offense is marked by the "Raider Attack", with five Oakland players and the defense. this week, RB Napoleon Kaufman played very well (227 yards, a team record), along with a nice performance by QB Jeff George. RB Barry Sanders added ten points, making the Isolators backfield one of the most dangerous in the league. The Golpes Baixos (1-7) couldn't avoid defeat, as coach Marcos Royer forgot to substitute for bye week players (probably because of the Thursday deadline), which turned out to be very costly - they started QB Brett Favre and RB Mike Alstott, so their point total suffered a lot by playing short-handed of two players. In a battle of teams trying to drive-up in the standings, the San Juan Coquis defeated the Cortland, NY Gradams Greats, 47-39. A key mistake by coach Patrick Graham of the Gradams Greats might have cost them a victory, as he started bye week RB Warrick Dunn of Tampa Bay. So, even with a great 17 point performance by the other RB, Terry Kirby, the Gradams Greats (3-5) lost by only 8 points. The Coquis (3-5) benefited by an 18-point performance by RB Karim Abdul-Jabbar, and a late TD by WR Ed McCaffrey to secure their victory. Both teams are tied for sixth place. -----
