Football '97 ESPN's Global Football League Week 8 Review -
Thurday, October 23rd Week 8 in GFL had some great finishes, with three games decided by less than 10 points, including two that ended with two point margins. The Sao Paulo Big Passaros pulled an upset victory over The Lounge Lizards, in a very low scoring game. Both teams struggled badly, with only one player going over ten points - and that was the difference for the Big Passaros (5-3): 11 points from Drew Bledsoe. The Lizards (5-3), who scored 97 points in Week 7, lost by only two points, 29-27. Coach Luis Curro couldn't believe he had won with such a weak, 29-point performance: "I'll only believe after I see the official scoreboard!", said the Big Passaros owner on Monday. The Screaming Meanies continue to impress, as they smashed the New York Freaky Fat Cats in a 80-29 victory, improving to 6-2, the best record in GFL and maintaining top position in the East, a game ahead of the Big Passaros. The Meanies were led once again by Denver's versatile RB Terrell Davis, with 21 points. Also having a great performance, 49ers WR Terrell Owens has played big lately, scoring two TD's and adding 16 points to the blowout. RB Barry Sanders was the only bright spot for the Cats, as they are suffering a lot from the Bengals struggle (Jeff Blake had a minus-1 performance, and Carl Pickens scored only 2 points), The Cats are now at fourth place in the East, with a 3-4-1 record. In a very close game, the New London Wacker Boyz II keeps coming and improving in the West, as they beat divisional rival Da Kine Hawaiian, 49-47. The big difference in the game came from the defensive side, as the Boyz Carolina Panthers' defense scored impressive 21 points in a big shut-out over the Saints. QB Vinny Testaverde added 10 points to secure the Boyz victory, giving them a 5-3 record, tied for first in the GFL West. The Hawaiian battled a lot, thanks to big games from QB Steve Young and RB Jerome Bettis, with 12 points each, but it just wasn't enough. They are still at the bottom of the West and tied for worst record in the league. After opening a good lead on Thursday, the Bloody Sabbaths were surprised by the Sao Paulo Travelers, as the Brazilian team came from behind to win by 9 points, 60-51. The game was very tight, though. The Travelers scored some points early on Sunday, thanks to a big performance by RB's Eddie George and Ricky Watters. But as the late games were about to finish, Sabbaths' star RB Napoleon Kaufman almost made a single effort run for the team, but Travelers QB John Elway secured the win in the final minutes, in a very exciting finish. The Crown City Thorns improved their hopes of getting a playoff berth with a win over the last place position Kauai Rainbows, 55-31. The Thorns, whose record is now 4-4, are still only a game from the second place Big Passaros in the East. Their win this week was decided by QB Mark Brunell's 16 points. WR Johnny Morton also played well with 9 points, in his return to the starting lineup after some weeks in the bench. The Steelers D added 14. As for the Rainbows, they are now in a very difficult position: last place in the East at 2-6, tied for worst record in the league with the Hawaiian. They made some bad decisions this week, starting QB Steve Beuerlein, who did not start for the Panthers, but a much costly one was a game time decision by coach Jon Scott, starting RB Mario Bates (no carries, zero points) instead of Karim Abdul-Jabbar (3 TD's, 21 points). ---
