|Ever since I was a kid I have had a great interest in castles and all things medieval. I am sure that this interest was spurred in part by my love of fantasy novels as well as Dungeons and Dragons. There is a certain romantic connotation to a sturdy stone fortress that houses a king and his chilvarous knights. I realize that the reality of castles in the middle ages was quite a bit different but no matter.
When my wife and I planned our first visit to the UK we decided to visit as many castles as time would permit. On subsequent trips we have had the opportunity to introduce our son Douglas to castle exploration. For our 15th wedding anniversary, we stayed a couple nights at Culcreuch castle in central Scotland.
