AFTER LOSING HEZEKIAH HORN, CODY TRIES TO FIND ANOTHER HERO IN A PREACHER NAMED GIDEON POOLE...

A disillusioned Cody, still reeling from Hezekiah's death, is told by Teaspoon to take some time off. At the end of a long run, which includes an Indian attack, Cody finds out that several Express stations have been closed due to the coming telegraph -- sponsored in part by Russell, Majors, and Waddell. He gets drunk and is beaten, all the while seeing a vision of himself at his own funeral.

Cody is rescued by Gideon Poole, a preacher. Cody shares Hezekiah's story with him. Gideon claims he and Hezekiah shared the same mission: to bring order and reason to the ever increasing wild West. He invites Cody to hear his sermon. He speaks about being the swift sword of righteousness, working to undo all the ills of the world. The impressionable Cody is drawn to his cause.

Meanwhile, back in Sweetwater, Teaspoon is marrying his deputy Barnett and Millicent, a woman Barnett met at a church social. As he is about to pronounce them man and wife, another man bursts in and claims to already be Millicent's husband. The woman turns out to have seven other husbands aside from Barnett and the other man, Lucius.

Spurred on by the recent almost-wedding, Kid broaches the subject with Lou. He doesn't feel comfortable sleeping with her when they aren't married. Lou simply avoids the subject.

Millicent sets her eyes on Teaspoon, who ignores her overtures. When word arrives that Millicent's first husband was killed following a lightning strike, he asks Barnett and Lucius if they want to press charges against her for polygamy. When they refuse, she rejects both of them and leaves town.

Cody aids Gideon in capturing various outlaws. Though he possesses warrants on all the men, several may no longer be guilty. They arrest a man who stole money from a bank he worked at several years ago, his only crime. He has a wife and daughter and promises to give all he has earned back in exchange for mercy. Gideon refuses and the man is later handed over to the authorities dead.

Cody begins to doubt Gideon's motives. As a test, Gideon orders Cody to bring in Teaspoon. Gideon has a warrant for him for murder. Cody returns to Sweetwater to warn Teaspoon, who explains he was acquitted of the charge years ago. Cody realizes Gideon is nothing more than a bounty hunter. As Gideon attempts to ambush Teaspoon, the boys and Cody overpower him and his men, and Gideon is killed.
