BUCK CROSS SUFFERS SWEETWATER'S HATRED WHEN INDIANS ATTACK A GROUP OF SOLDIERS...

Teaspoon's young friend from the army, Col. Matthew Curtis, arrives in Sweetwater to negotiate a treaty with the Indians. He doesn't believe in the treaty, however, preferring to be back East where the "real work" is. Teaspoon sends Buck Cross with him to act as interpreter when he talks to the Sioux. But on their way to Scott's Bluff where the meeting is Buck realizes that Curtis's intentions are not honorable. Buck accuses the army of using the treaty to drive Indians away from their ancestral land without giving them anything in return. Just before they reach Scott's Bluff, Buck leaves the army.

The group continue on but they are ambushed by a group of Indians. During the attack, Curtis is dumbfounded and unable to act. He ends up getting shot, but he still manages to hide. When the Indians leave, he returns to Sweetwater and meets Buck who went back when he heard shots fired. Curtis immediately arrests Buck and accuses him of doublecrossing the army.

Teaspoon vouches for Buck's innocence but Curtis is vehement. Some of the townfolks hear his nasty words against Buck and believes him. Teasppon and Curtis return to the site of the attack and they find one more soldier alive though unconsious. That night, Curtis dreams of the soldier getting up and telling him he is a coward for leaving his men behind.

Buck, on the other hand, complains to his friends that whenever there is Indian trouble, he always gets blamed by the town although he doesn't have anything to do with it.

He sneaks out the next day to go to the Sioux's camp. He learns that a renegade band of Arapaho Indians were responsible for the attack. The Sioux leader agrees to meet with Curtis. On his way back to Sweetwater, Buck is arrested by the army. He tells Curtis of the Sioux's willingness to meet but the colonel decides to ambush the Sioux party When the Indians find their brothers dead, they decide to attack the town.

The wounded soldier dies but Teaspoon asks the doctor not to tell anybody yet. He hopes to find out what really happened on Scott's Bluff. The Marshall seeks the help of a photographer who was on the site of the first attack. He finds a picture of Curtis's saber in a place where it shouldn't ahve been. Teaspoon confronts Curtis and he admits to his cowardice. He decides to finally take responsibility for his actions and goes with Teaspoon to meet with the Sioux who take his as their prisoner.
