1000 years have past since the War of the Magi, which wiped out most of civilization. But now technology has redeveloped, and magic is being rediscovered.
The Empire's insane Kefka enslaves a girl born with the gift of magic, and plans to use her to retrieve a frozen Esper. An Esper is a creature from another world that has magical powers. Kefka wants these so that he can have magic for himself to rule the world.
Terra is sent to retrieve the Esper when she discovers a mysterious bond that sends her unconscience. She is found and is removed from her slavery, and meets up with a group known as the 'Returners,' who are against the Empire.
