Yet another of the popular Final Fantasy series, this one amazed me just like the rest. This RPG has stunning FMV and an excellent soundtrack along with great fun, I would have to say this is Square at it's best. This was a great way for Square to begin with Sony.
One of the most notable thing of FF7 was the fantastic FMV. Just about everything looked realistic. But aside from the FMV, the battles were great. It was about time we saw Final Fantasy in 3D. But the backgrounds are all 2D with the little 3D characters running around. It isn't too bad.
The soundtrack was really good. Aerith's (Or Aeris) multiple themes were incredible, and One Winged Angel was very suitible for final boss music. There isn't all that much more to say about the music.
In the beginning, when I first played FF7, I was rather dissapointed. I thought there wasn't going to be an overworld. But then, ten hours through the game I finally exit Midgar. When you finally (And I do mean finally) beat the game, you wish you could go back to Midgar. The game sort of starts off slow, but once you realize who the big bad guy is, you really do get absorbed into the game. After a while, the storyline may seem rather confusing, and doesn't make sense for a while.
The overall environment of the game seemed kind of quiet and dark. This is somewhat hard to explain, but the only point that I saw lots of activity was the Gold Saucer. The Gold Saucer was cool, and had several addictive mini games, Chocobo racing, a battle arena, and more. A lot of things had to be done there to get powerful.
Final Fantasy 7 also introduces the new Materia System, where you "level up" your materia to learn new magic. This is time consuming, but it's really cool if you get master materia (Every spell). Along with the materia system, Final Fantasy 7 is also the first to introduce the Limit Break system, where in the event that your character gets hit numerous times, you can pull off a killer move that is bound to do plenty of damage.
This is truly one of Square's masterpieces, but you do get sick of it after you've played it three or four times. That's what I did. And I got sick of it rather quickly. Of course, it IS the only thing to do when waiting for the next Final Fantasy game.
So do I recommend it? Of course! If it has the word "Final" and "Fantasy," it's got to be good (Except in the case of Mystic Quest).
